the gym is the new fad

of late I have been turned off by the gym.My gym emphasises cardio and pink weights. It is a social club where people come to find dates. The trainer is more interested in flirting and even tells me that I should not lift heavy as I may get bulky & even stops me at times.I feel that people can get a more functional workou by using odd objects & hill sprints. My gym is only interested in making money and sells lies so that people get frustrated with their goals.

    That's not a gym.

That's a lounge with funky seating.

Your "trainer" is an idiot. Go look at the women lifting heavy board.

This word, "fad"... I do not think it means what you think it means.
  • This word, "fad"... I do not think it means what you think it means.

"fad"... an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived; a craze.
Odd object training is more functional than gym equipments. These equipments try to make workouts "easier".Compare machines to free weights, odd objects like sandbag ,tyres gets you "dirtier".So I feel ,this is again my sole opinion that gym are probably there partly to make business because we as humans want sophisticated things/places to workout.Again it is only my opinion.

Weight machines can help you keep a focused form and help keep you from getting hurt, or at least lowering the chances of you getting hurt. Some folks like them, some folks don't. Free weights have pros and cons too. You can do more exercises with less varied equipment, though you can get hurt if you aren't careful. Watch your form, the amount of weight you use, and a spotter is a very good thing to have. Odd objects, sure, you can do that too. Variety, mixing things up, but you still have to keep the safety factor in mind. Why? Because if you are hurt or broken you can't keep up the intensity or the progress. And sometimes, even after you heal, you may not be able to go back to what you were doing. Life is cummulative, what you screw up today you often have to live with the rest of your life. Be smart, have fun, move forward. And yeah, gyms are a fad in a lot of ways, but they have been a fad since the late 60's and 70's. Find one that works for you and stick with it. You make your own path. Good luck on reaching your goals.

Seems like the new "fad" around here is to complain about your gym. :grumble:

If you don't like your gym, simply find a new one. Problem solved.

If a machine doesn't fit you perfectly (common) then it is forcing you into an unnatural path of motion, and that creates wear & tear on the body.

Also machines don't simulate how we use our body outside the gym (standing, using multiple muscle groups simultaneously), so they don't adequately prepare people for real lifting situations.

Anyway, i agree with the OP that "odd object training" is valuable. Lots of people work out with sandbags, ropes, sledgehammers, prowlers, tires, etc.. and many gyms are stocking these items too.

So, because your gym is a pick up scene with some weights and machines, now gyms are the new fad? Yeah, no, they're not.

Find a new gym, preferably one that is geared towards people serious about their training. Look for reviews on Yelp, Foursquare, etc., before signing up.

I think the new "fad" on MFP is to make things up to get people to reply to a post. I really do think this, because I don't believe a trainer would come up to somebody in the middle of training and tell them to stop doing something. Wouldn't they just tell you in the first place not to do it since they are your trainer? Did they watch you put all of the weights on, wait for you to do a rep and say " hold on there young lady, you're doing it all wrong"

the billion dollar weight loss industry often promotes fad diets & fitness myth for monetary profit.I am not against the gym but I often feel that many gyms promote the wrong mindset & training.

A lot of people getting together, regardless of what they're doing will promote a social environment to some extent. Those gyms are great for the people who like them. If yours is not working out for you, then you'd need to find your own exercise solution. I rather like going to the gym to do cardio and the pink weight stuff (Zumba, Zumba toning, for example). I successfully used exercise videos for a while, until I moved to a second floor apartment. So joining the gym and working out with like minded people has been great. Not every gym would offer what I want and I'd simply move on from that one!

I travel a lot on business and I love visiting gyms and pulling 8 (4+4) plates off the floor for reps. I don't grunt. I don't drop the bar. No messy chalk. No fancy gear. Just walk up to the bar and pull. I get a lot of confused and judgmental looks. This pleases me.
