I used to work as a skincare consultant. PM me if you want a basic online consultation. Acne care is surprisingly personalized, so I'd happily help you find some things that work for you.

OTC cleansers and products utilize two different methods: benzyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Personally, when I need a boost co clear up my skin I prefer products based with salicylic acid.
Tea Tree oil based products are amazing for clearing up infection and treating inflammation and redness.
I'm not break-out prone but when I do get them they are lurkers on the chin which are hormonal based. I drink plenty of water and use Nutrogena Calming Acne wash. It's green and has aloe in it.

I found that my acne disappeared as I removed processed carbs and sugar from my diet. The less I ate, the better my skin was. I also found that staying hydrated helps my skin look more refreshed. I used to use facial scrubs and masks regularly as well as prescription creams from my dermatologist (even as an adult) and now I just get an occasional pimple without needing any of that stuff.

As a side note, I still eat fruit, potatoes, rice, etc.. I just try not to eat much junk food.

    Hey,
My tip for acne is to see a professional. I had terrible acne and seeked medical advice. I have little scarring and no pimples now. This would be my advice.

Believe it or not, oil can be your friend. For years I used Proactiv, which was good, but expensive. Then I tried and even more expensive olive oil-based cleanser, which was fantastic, but out of my budget. So I started looking for less expensive versions of olive oil cleansers and VOILA found one you can make at home with ingredients you may already have: Olive oil (or sunflower oil) and castor oil.

Quantities: I have very oily skin (though through this method it has evened out more), so I mix 1 Tbsp castor oil (which is a drying agent) and 3 Tbsp olive or sunflower oil, in a clean bottle. (For combination or dry skin, add more olive/sunflower oil, or reduce castor oil). This gives me about 2 weeks worth of cleanser.

To use: Shake mixture to blend. Pour about a quarter-sized amount of oil mix into dry hands. Rub hands together to warm the solution, then gently massage onto dry face. Let sit for a couple of minutes. Soak clean washcloth with warm/hot (not too hot) water, squeeze out excess and press to face for about 30 seconds (to gently steam face). Gently wipe solution off face. Repeat Soak/wipe process two more times. Optional: Put a couple of drops of oil mixture in damp hands, rub together, and pat on damp face - to act as moisturizer.

The theory behind this is simple: oil dissolves oil (I actually learned this back in my auto shop days, and had never thought to apply to my skin). I've been using this method for over a year and my skin has never looked better. I've gone from paying nearly $100/mo for skin products to less than $1/mo.

I cut dairy and processed foods (for the most part) out of my diet and my acne completely cleared up. I know this doesn't work for everyone, but it transformed my skin. Good luck to you!!

The only thing that worked for me was Accutane. I had acne from a young age and still had it in college. I tried every cream and pill. I thought I'd outgrow it, but it never went away and was covering my face. I was frustrated and went to Accutane, which cured it. Rarely do I get acne anymore.

Witch hazel and tea tree oil on cotton swab. And using aloe vera for dryness. Or, using apple cider vinegar to clean your face and olive oil to hydrate your skin after washing it.
  • I get acne whenever I don't eat enough fats. Peanut butter basically saved my skin haha

    I agree with this ^^^^.

I used to have terrible acne when I was younger.... and still get it in my 50's. For me, it's directly related to sugar and processed carbs. It clears up when I don't eat those things. Drinking water really helps. Also, it helps if you train yourself never to touch your face, neck, etc. with your hands. Your hands have dirt and oil on them that will cause your skin to break out.

When I was younger, I took a treatment called Accutane that really helped. It dries out all the oil in your skin while you are on it, and when you go off your skin's pores and the oil comes back, but it eliminated a lot of the breaking out -- not all but quite a bit.

I use this exact routine, except I use coconut oil instead of olive. My skin has never looked better.

Many people swear by witchhazel but that stuff irritates the bejesus out of my skin! I find that when I elimate dairy my skin is better. Raw honey, use as a facemask, spot treatment, eat it, same with coconut oil. Both are antibacterial and healing.

^All of this. I've done pretty much the same (cut out most pre-packaged or refined/processed foods, foods with added sugars, general convenience or fast foods - I've also cut out a lot of dairy, but mostly for the reason that if it's in my house the boyfriend will eat it, feel sick and fart up a storm, and I'm not down with that :noway: ) and had wonderful results. I pretty much only drink water now instead of any other beverage (no more coffee now either, and only the occational tea) and I found that made a big difference too. My skin is less oily and has way less breakouts if any. I still use a cleanser about every other day, and a toner plus moisturizor, but nothing fancy. Honestly the change in diet made the biggest difference!

Unless you have extremely non-sensitive skin, please don't put vinegar on your face. It is very acidic and can seriously mess up your skin pH!!!

This will sound really weird, but try using toothpaste as a spot treatment. Put it on a spot at night and it will dry it out. I've been using this for years.

Egg whites on your face for about 20 minutes. Once you have all you need for your face, add the remainder of the egg whites and yolk to your hair. Great conditioner. After the 20 minutes. Just jump in the shower.

My hubby recommends this, but he says only white toothpaste works(I'm thinking the baking soda?). He claims it also works great for hickeys lol(back in his teenage years)

I find if I eat too much dairy I break out, so I keep it limited. Also, surprisingly, once I stopped using fancy/expensive cleansers, I haven't had one bad breakout (aside from one or two blemishes around TOM). I actually just use Dove body soap now. No scrubs or anything harsh. My skin has never looked better!

P.S. I do use Proactiv's green tea moisturizer, though. I love that stuff!

I'm a Mary Kay consultant, and the acne-prone skincare line that I sell is what I use, and it really works well for me. That being said, everyone's skincare needs are different, and the only person really qualified to tell you what you need is a dermatologist.

^^^ this, because there are different causes of it, including hormonal. I had a friend who had severe acne as a teenager and an adult, turned out it was because she had PCOS, and it needed hormonal treatment to clear up. There are a number of different treatments for really stubborn acne that require a doctor to find the actual cause of it first, because you have to treat the cause not the symptoms.

Agree with previous posters that you really do need to rule out hormonal problems. If it is not hormonal and instead just really stubborn acne, I did hours upon hours of research on treating it when I broke out at age 18 for a year. I am still getting my skin back on track three years later from the scarring and marks that it left (which wasn't helped by using bad treatments and picking at my face, so seriously, DON'T do either of those things). I worked in a cosmetics store at the time and trust me, most products no matter how expensive contain comedeogenic ingredients which just exacerbates the problem. The only thing that worked for me was the regimen on acne.org. I didn't buy their products and instead used ones over the counter. Unfortunately benzoyl peroxide is NOT for the faint of heart but it really does work when used properly.

    A couple helpful sites:

    acne.org
    http://seriousskincareblog.blogspot.com/2013/03/list-of-comedogenic-ingredients.html

I have since stopped using the benzoyl peroxide and just use CeraVe cleanser and jojoba oil as moisturizer. For makeup I only use tinted moisturizer by tarte on my face. That's it. I don't change it up and I stick to my products that I know work. My regimen during my breakout was CeraVe cleanser, 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel by Acne Free, CeraVe moisturizer mixed in with jojoba oil. I did this religiously 2x per day exactly as described on acne.org. It took about three months of that before my skin cleared up to about 85% and took another two months after that before it was completely clear besides marks and scarring.

My suggestion is to throw out everything you're using (or at least check it all against the list of comedeogenic ingredients above) and work on getting products that are not going to irritate or make you break out worse. But, first go to the doctor and make sure you are not dealing with something that is more than skin deep (hurrr). Good luck!

ps: I should add that separate from any allergies or sensitivities you may have, diet really does not have as much effect on acne/break outs as previously thought. If you're interested I can dig up the studies.

totes agree with these ppl. High water intake and removing/decreasing key foods are such a simple way to help things.
