There aren't any no calorie foods. The whole deal about a food using more calories to digest than what is contains is a myth. There are some very low calorie foods like iceberg lettuce and celery but they still contain calories.

    exactly.

I recently bought a cookbook for a fundraiser at a nursing home and in it there was a recipe for "No Calorie Stew" with tomatoes, cabbage, celery, onion, etc. It actually said at the bottom "NO CALORIES so eat as much as you like!" Wat!?

My favorite no cal stuff would be hot tea (plain)...or diet soda, which I drink once or twice a month. Even gum has calories, albeit very few.

what about pickles that say no calories? I wondered about it because it has 2 carbs. I saw what I wanted (0 calories) and didn't dig deeper.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a food that is calorie-free must contain less than five calories per serving. A low-calorie food may offer 40 calories or fewer per serving. Most calorie-free foods are actually either beverages, broths or sugar-free dessert items, such as gelatin, sugar-free hard candy, or condiments. The number of food items that are calorie-free is very limited.

Certain vegetables, in the quantities specified, offer five calories or fewer. Examples include one dill pickle spear, 1 cup chopped watercress or Swiss chard, 1/2 cup raw cucumber slices, 1/3 cup of shredded cooked cabbage, such as Napa or Chinese, 1/4 cup chopped, cooked (or 3/4 cup raw) New Zealand spinach, 1 cup of chopped lettuce (all varieties, including Boston, bibb, red or green leaf, and iceberg), 1/2 cup of sliced radishes, 1/3 cup of sliced summer squash (all varieties), one medium celery stalk, 10 raw bell pepper strips, two cooked or raw asparagus spears, 1/3 cup sliced white mushrooms and 1 cup raw spinach.

What a bummer thought I could eat all the pickles I wanted!

FDA allows the labeling of these 'free food' products to advertise as 0 calories per serving

N7. When the caloric value for a serving of a food is less than 5 calories, can the actual caloric value be declared?

Answer: The caloric value of a product containing less than 5 calories may be expressed as zero or to the nearest 5 calorie increment (i.e., zero or 5 depending on the level). Foods with less than 5 calories meet the definition of “calorie free” and any differences are dietarily insignificant. 21 CFR 101.9(c)(1)

Per a single serving....they can say 0 calories if it's less than 5 calories per serving. Ultimately it is very low cal, but it's not zerro cal ultimately. And if you ate an entire jar of pickles you would be consuming more than just a negligible number of calories. Just one of the ways that labels can be misleading.
