I am looking at getting a heart rate monitor for tracking calories burned a little more accurately and to help me train for a 5k. I was just wondering if they are at all accurate for things like work out video's where the cardio isn't quite steady. And do any of you have suggestions on HRM, there just seems to be so many out there.

yes, they work well for any cardio workout. Get one you an enter your specifics into ( Weight, gender, age) and they can be very accurate. Some use them of weight lifting as well, but there are some just of this, if it is your thing. My Polar FT7 does great with DVDs, ellipticals, treadmills, indoor and out door bike riding, intervals, Zumba or HIT .
