Lower belly not getting any smaller?

Hi guys! I'll begin with my stats. I'm 5'1 and 95 lbs. I know i'm on the brink of being underweight but the problem is that my lower belly is not getting any smaller. I'm losing weight everywhere except my lower belly. Doing squats is not helping either

Anyone else facing the same problem?

  • I have come to accept the fact that I may always poke out a bit in my lower belly. It is my body shape and how my internal organs are placed and genetically it is where women in my family store fat. That and their chest. I lost that but the belly remains. And since I can feel that under that tiny layer of fat there is rock hard muscle, I am okay with having a bit of pudge there. My measurements are great, my clothes fit well and I am healthy. Can't ask for much more. All that aside, a lot of women have had great success with eliminating belly fat with heavy lifting. You could look into that.
  • Thank you so much! :)

Without seeing a side profile shot of you, I cannot say for sure, but you may have some anterior pelvic tilt and/or lumbar lordosis. Both wll cause your belly to protrude even with visible abs. Do you know your current bodyfat percentage?
  • My current body fat is 17.49%. I googled anterior pelvic tilt and I think I have it. Thanks matt!! Gonna fix this problem by correcting my posture.

As long as you are lean, you will look fine. Sometimes it even makes your abs "pop" more. There are muscles that need to be stretched and strengthened to correct the issue, but do not expect it to happen overnight.
  • Aight, thanks!!
  • Yeah it's pretty low but I don't look 95lbs!

Thanks Matt! I"m looking into this too.

I'm 4 10 and 95 pounds although my body fat is still a bit too high (per a standing machine) this is interesting.
  • I, too, have accepted that my lower belly will never be as flat as I'd like. I agree, it's sometimes just the shape of the body. As cliche as it may sound, if you're proud of your body in general, celebrate the positives.

It's very common and try not to put all the blame on the pelvic tilt. It is true that people store fat in different areas and some of us have very stubborn fat in our bellies that is the last to go. As long as you are progressing towards lowering your body fat percentage, it will go away. Make sure to track circumference measurements.

Have you tried reverse and bicycle crunches? They might help a little.

I like that you recognize losing additional weight is not necessarily in your best interest. Some are so stuck on looking a certain way that they go too far in that area. Spot reduction does not work and I agree that some of what you may be perceiving may be hereditary or just how YOUR body is built. However, there are some abdominal exercises that can help in many cases when the ab muscles have been revealed (layer of fat not covering over them).. Different exercises help different parts of the abdominal area... Leg lifts in particular will target the muscles in the lower abdomen as will an ab machine that operates via raising the lower body... Elevated (inverted) sit ups, crunches, crunch machines, torso rotators, planks, and roller push ups all target different parts of the abdominal wall. You may not ever get that area to totally go away but these are things that will help you get as close as you can. There are two factors concerning abs... The first and foremost of course is nutrition but we cannot totally discount the exercise component, especially after the layer of fat has been removed from over the abdominals. Best wishes on getting where you want to be. :flowerforyou:
