Basic questions would be how much are you eating and what are you eating?

A lot of research suggests that people who exercise a lot tend to get very hungry and eat more than they burn. That's why diet is critical to losing and exercise so important in maintaining.

I need to workout everyday for 2 hours to maintain my weight, why? I eat healthy and limit myself to what I eat.

You must be eating too much and logging incorrectly.

I think you should aim for ten hours working out and limit yourself to 100 calories.

I workout everyday and I'm losing just fine, my appetite is decreased actually. Depends on the person I guess and the way their program is scheduled because in the program that I am currently in, one of the 7 days is just stretching

    why?
  • How do you find the time? I find it challenging to squeeze in 1 hour and that is usually really early in the morning! I think I need at least that level of activity to maintain but fear I will get discouraged when I can't find the time!

Of course you can work out and still lose! In fact, it's probably the best way to do it, because you're maintaining muscle and also allowing yourself to eat more and stay at a deficit. Exercise also just keeps you healthy.

Most people who exercise without logging their intake, though, tend to eat more than they use. Thus exercise alone without maintaining the same calories doesn't help weight loss (although you might look absolutely fantastic.) If you don't eat more, that's wonderful.
  • I was trying to maintain my previous weight but put on a few pounds. But it seems that I am unable to lose the few pounds without doing at least some exercise daily. I have stopped eating back my exercise calories because I gained the weight because of doing that. And now that I'm only eating up to 1200 cals, I have started back to lose weight slowly. But I don't like the part where I...if I do not exercise daily, I gain weight. For a minimum, I must do 45mins of jogging, in order to see a little weight loss. I don't understand why I must work so hard. I'm 151.8lbs today but earlier November, I was 146.4lbs. I'm not discouraged though...just wondering why I must work that hard.

I will second this. It really does depend on the level of intensity, but this WILL happen. I struggle with this now. I'm training at roughly the same level I did when I was an athlete in college. I want to eat EVERYTHING in front of me and have to fight to keep myself at the calorie limit I have set for myself, which isn't low to begin with. I lament at least once a week that I can't just pack away the calories without a care or concern like I did in college....

The calorie recommendation is just that a recommendation. If you find your needing to workout that much in order to maintain then the recommendation maybe too high for you. also I don't like that My Fitness Pal adds calories to your allowmeant when you workout. Personally I've never actually added those calories. I just keep to the original recommendation before I logged my exercise.

if you have the means, consult a nutritionist or dietitian to fine tune your diet. A personal trainer can give you ideas and can push you harder if need be. Don't get discouraged, eating right and exercising are worth doing, regardless of what weight you are at. You could be at a plateau in your weight loss, or changing your body fat percentage, but not your overall weight. We are all individuals, and what works for some, won't work for all... keep at it, and you'll find what works. For me, my nutritionist told me to up my calorie intake, just by a bit, and I actually found it easier to lose weight! Good luck & take care.

Ou! I think I may just do that...not log my exercises.

Depending on what you're doing in those two hours, you're likely only burning 600-900 more calories for your efforts. Why not just eat 600-900 fewer daily calories?

(Or better, why not workout one hour and eat 300-450 calories fewer?)

I work hard on moving more to burn more calories. I don't eat them all back, but it seems to do the trick on maintenance.

Too much cardio. Do 6 hours of cardio and maybe add 6 or7 hours of weights to that. 100 calories isn't enough. 110 is probably more realistic.

If you have to workout 2 hours a day to maintain it, then you're probably eating too much.

I agree with this except I believe that exercise and diet are equally crucial in both dieting and maintenance. I hope OP is accurately logging every meal and snack in order to ascertain the actual calories consumed. Otherwise, OP should see a DR. Exercising two hours a day should never be a necessity in order to maintain unless you're eating a TON.

Interesting that you started a post were you said you were eating at a surplus. Then you start a post that you were binge eating.

You are either an 8-ball or someone who likes to type odd posts and see what responses you get.
  • I workout 5-6 days a week -I do weights cardio-I also believe working out and eating right and log in before I bite the food -helps me-sometime I am at the gym 1 hour sometime 2 hours-it depends-I think to each their own everyone is different-

I don't work out everyday and its because I cut carbs out so my body has no choice but to use fat also if I'm gonna work out then its ok to eat carbs.

But you can overeat calories and still not lose weight. Fat loss happens when there's deficit, not necessarily because one cuts carbs.

I used to swim a mile under 45 minutes every day at lunch time (6 days/week). I rode the bicycle after work (or commuted by bike), between 15 and 25 miles.

With that regimen, I could consume 2800-3000 cal/day and maintain weight and hope that I would not get injured.... which I did on a triathlon (pulled Achilles tendon).

It is extremely difficult to go from a robust diet and exercise routine to almost nothing, and at my age, recovery is slow.

So now, I monitor my caloric intake very carefully (thank you Fitness Pal!) and try to do strength training (weights) and cycling (aerobic) on alternating days, and continue to hope that I don't injured.

Well in my case I don't feel like overeAting when I cut my carbs. Ive actually felt satisfied and when i feel like im getting hungry again i eat little snacks like veggies fruit cheese which contain fiber. Carbs make me feel like I'm lacking something. If you want to try it I'd be happy to hear your results. Remember the food pyramid has failed the American people and recommends 6-11 servings of carbs a daily.

I say workout then but still bring back your carbs down to 50 to 100 which should be mostly from fruits and vegetables.
Also if you look at a bag of gummy beat candy it brags about being fat free you surely wouldn't be eating that if you also notice it's full of carbs and sugar. But if its non fat yogurt it's also loaded with sugar and carbs
