Osteoarthritis and weights/exercise

So I have a question. I started running in June, had lots of issues with what I thought was my hips. after expensive dr visits, X-rays, and MRI's the doctor concluded I have bad osteoarthritis in my lower back that was aggravated by the running. There's nothing that can be done to fix it. I have cut back with the cardio, but the question that's been nagging me is this: does anyone have experience with lifting and osteoarthritis in the spine?? I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not so I'm trusting the great wide web of people on MFP for advice.
Thanks in advance!!! :-)
