Everytime I exercise,I get laid up for a week. The first time was playing xbox 360 kinet and couldnot move my shoulder for 4 days. Second time I walk about 2 miles and while I am still laid up and off the cane. So I would like to know how I should excise with having pain. And having a history of accidents. Doc said all I need to do is loose weight. Any thing that's wrong like pains or discomfort she said its just my weight causeing it which I think isn't true. Any comments or suggestions are welcome!

Try shorter walks (5 to 10 minutes, not miles) and simple stretching to start. Not yoga, just basic stretching. It sounds like you've been very inactive for a long time and your muscles/tendons aren't flexible enough to take the stress of longer periods of exercise yet. In the meantime, log all your food and stay as close to goal as you can. Eating at a deficit will make the weight come off eventually, it's just easier with exercise. However, exercise will get easier as the weight comes off too. Good luck!0

Excess weight can definitely increase inflammation. You may need to strictly diet for a while to lose some of the initial weight. Taking something like fish oil seems to help my post workout aches significantly, but perhaps there are better things out there for this. Does it seem to be fast movements that irritate your joints? Does heavy load do it as well? You could go from more of an active, cardio style workout to something more controlled and strength based. If you are lifting heavy weights then it really only takes like 15 repetitions for each exercise to get the benefit. I'm not sure if this would be easier on you than doing a ton of reps at a lighter weight, but it is something to consider.0

You don't need exercise to lose weight just a caloric deficit.... that being said start small with your exercise... At 560 lbs. I could barely stand let alone walk from room to room... I had to get in a therapy pool to use water displacement to be able to stand long enough to exercise... First time in I could only do 5 minutes, the next time I went back I did 7 minutes and kept building upon that.... when I finally got out of the pool and on land and was fitted for braces, my very first walk was 50 ft. the next day I add another 10 ft. and so on and so forth.... Now even with bone on bone knee's multiple surgeries and knee injections every 4-6 months I can get on the treadmill and not blink at doing a few miles... You just have to build up to it....... but weight loss will happen with your diet...... Best of Luck0

Try pool activities. I know it's getting colder now, but maybe you can find an indoor or heated pool at a local gym. Easy on the joints and bones!!
Good Luck :bigsmile:0 -
- Start slowly; do what you can without pain, try to do a little more the next time
- stretch afterwards - it really does help with recovery from exercise
As someone who's been dealing with arthritis since my teens, I have to tell you - do what you can to get moving. The more pain we have, the less we want to move. And the less we move, the more pain we have the next time. Get going, do anything, slowly at first, and build up. It will loosen things up, and over time, will lessen the arthritis symptoms. It's worth the effort.0 -
Cutting back drastically on processed sugars and grains, especially wheat, has helped my inflammation tremendously. I went Paleo-ish a year ago, and I quickly noticed a drastic decrease in my pain levels, even before I lost a lot of weight. As the weight decreased, the pain decreased even more. I was then able to start exercising some, but had to start slowly and work my way up.
I definitely see an increase in pain when I eat too high carbs and sugar. I would never have believed that a change in my diet would make that much of a difference.
BTW I have a form of RA, and an autoimmune disease of my spinal cord resulting in Cauda Equina Syndrome. I spent a few years partially in a wheel chair, but now I only need my cane on longer excursions outside the house.
Slow and easy, but steady and consistent, will help you progress.0
