Itching after eating kiwi, bell peppers and grapes?

I have some kind of allergy where I get awful itching all over about 20 mins after eating kiwi, bell peppers and grapes. I thought it was just the fruit until tonight when I had some red bell pepper. Only the drowsy antihistamines seem to make it go away once it starts!

Does anyone know what common allergen is in these three foods?

I live in a very small town with lack lustre doctors who have just told me to keep a food diary. I don't really eat many fruits or vegetables because I'm scared I'm going to start itching, which is what happened today!

I have always had the occasional itch attack for years, but it is happening more and more.

Check out oral allergy syndrome. If that's what's causing your reaction, it has more to do with another allergen that's getting mixed up with the fruit/veggie.

This^^ my daughter can't have apples, cherries, carrots and several other fruits and vegetables. She carries an epi pen because her reactions can become severe. Luckily we have been able to counter act with Benedryl so far but she must be very careful and read labels.
  • I get a milder version of this with kiwis, mangos, and some types of greens. Its usually just itching in my mouth and lips, not all over. But its really annoying. It just started happening all of a sudden. One day I ate a kiwi, and I was fine. Tried one a month or two later, and Boom! Itchy mouth and lips. Also, sometimes if they use pesticides or something on the produce, it can cause reactions as well.
