It comes down to a lack of knowledge on the subject. I remember when I started (and I'm not even a woman who are hit with even worse fitness BS info), I was worried about bulking up too much.

Now I know A LOT more about all of this, and that bulking up will never happen by accident, because it happens so goddamn slow lol
Yeah, I think if any of these people decided they actually wanted to gain muscle and get bigger, and saw how frickin' hard they had to work for so little a result, they'd crawl under a rock and we'd never hear from them again!

I do think pics of VS models, etc, are mainly to blame. You take a normal woman, have her start to lift, and the normal process of having the muscles get firm makes them bigger than those models. It's not that that is anywhere near 'bulky'; it's just that those girls are long and lanky and low on the LBM scale, so they are a bad goal that way. Also airbrushing: Most women have the lovely divots and bumps of the different heads of all the muscles when they get fit, but they airbrush those out of models' pics!

Seriously, look up airbrushing articles, and you'll see how often they take away delts, biceps (like, always), ab definition, etc. It's awful. It's like women's actual muscles are supposed to look different than they do in real life, too. Oh, no, her upper arm is bigger than her elbow! Better airbrush that ugly muscle out of there...

Not only does it have to do with mis information but there isnt a lot of teaching going on about it ... You can get someone at the gym that wants to charge you an arm and a leg to do it, or you can attempt to do with alone but that is dangerous and frustrating.

I have on SEVERAL occasions yelled at men for not re-racking their weights ... I am 5 8 sometimes I cant even reach the bar to move it down for my squats! I also can't carry 6 plates of 45s across the gym ...

Everyone seems to just yell at women about weight lifting, but I wonder how many people have actually taken the time out to explain it to someone, offer their assistance, through MFP or otherwise.

Like I said I like to lift, even with all the layers of fat, but if a chick isnt comfortable to get down with it give the tools to educate herself about it and the support to try it out!!!

I've never seen anyone yell at women about weight lifting- and if you are here more than 1 day actually reading- we explain a lot to women.

Seriously- I have a stock answer typed up to answer typical questions and I just cut and paste it- the question gets asked SO frequently it's not even funny.

And - PS_ leaving the bar to high isn't their problem- I leave the bar in a reasonable place- often times where I re-rack it. If you cant' reach it- that's on you.

Re-racking weights is a problem EVERY gym deals with- men don't put plates away- women walk off with 5-20 lb DB's and leave them where every they want- it's incredibly common- women are the worst violators- not only do they take them- they take them to some deep corner of the gym to do their plie squat turbo fire bullchit work out and then leave it there. They are the probably as bad if not worse then men about that. seriously.

The serious weight training women- they re-rack the weights- the other women that come in and put one ten on each side and do 50 reps- then walk off- see it happen ALL the time.

Ask a staff member or fellow gym goer for assistance. Most will be happy to help.

    This quite an interesting article:

I get a lot of ideas for my own workouts from Marianne Kane's website and I think she is a true inspiration to women who train & train hard...

I had my husband show me the ropes in the weight lifting area. It's been a few months and if I squint I might see a gain. The biggest noticeable change is the booty.
