Spent 30mins moving boxes.. I burnt 398 calories?

Yeah, okay.

Everywhere I've gone on the internet says that I would have lost 300+ calories for merely moving boxes around for a half hour? Is this really right?

If this is a bunch of bologna, what would be the range of calories actually burnt? The boxes were kind of heavy and I did sweat a bit, but I don't think it was 398 calories worth of sweat.

For weird things that involved effort, but not a lot, I usually just use walking, 2mph and put the time down.

You might be able to somewhat of an estimate if you used a heart rate monitor. But other than that, how can they possibly know? You could have been moving empty boxes! LOL

I would think that it is an over estimate (1/2 hour of intense circuit training only burns about 335 calories for me), if I do a lot of heavy activity outside of my normal day for 4-5 hours, I log it as a half hour of cleaning about 140 calories or so. Most of the time I just don't log it at all.

I probably wouldn't even log it.

Yeah, not so much. I move boxes, (putting away a liquor order) all the time and unfortunately in my case as per my Bodymedia, it only burns about 4 or 5 calories a minute, at best, even working hard. Like all activity, it will depend on your size and fitness level. Logging it as walking is probably a good choice.
