Should I remove healthy but binge inducing food?

Tooo many plain greek yogurts with berries. It's super healthy my favorite treat but also binge food when I have insomnia and get hungry in the wee hours. Do you think I should just remove the most sugary plain greek yogurt with nutritious berries from my dirty so I don't have associated blood sugar spikes and binges? I would just need a health sweet tooth satisfying replacement for snacks maybe chocolate protein powder?
Have you guys ever decided to remove a healthy but personal binge food in order to keep your eating more balanced and not go overboard with cals?

I'd be super grateful for your insight experience knowledge share. Multiplicity of thanks rockstars ???? today and always!!

This may be an obvious question but have you tried eating more calories/protein throughout the day so that you aren't hungry late at night? Is the only time you binge on greek yogurt late at night? I wonder if you'd be less inclined to binge if you weren't hungry at that time.
  • Yes thank you I've way increased my meal size and feel very full. But still am left with my sweet treat craving every evening when get home accessible. Berries like leafy greens make me feel healthy but reactive hypoglycemia body can't handle as much as desired. Not can I seem to rid myself of the sweetooth...

But yes I never skip a meal even if what available not that tasty to stay safe make sure not get too hungry be set up for binge. But insomnia is another trigger yes.

Still totally perplexed whether SHOUKD remove my binge food despite healthy so could be more mentally physically healthy on track. Just would need a replacement for hypoglycemia bedtime snack something sweet...,

Thank you for writing any and all thoughts advice experience yes!!

    Hi there,

Most of my trigger foods tend to be of the chocolate variety, but I have been known to overindulge on healthy treats (and even some unappetizing ones!) when binge-mode hits.

What I did at first was stop buying the items that would lead me to binge. I told myself quite simply that if I wasn't going to be responsible with my favourite treats (read: eat them all at once), I wouldn't buy them. And that was the rule I stuck to.

If I'm not sure I have the self-control at the time to handle a particular food (e.g. right before TOM), I don't buy it. It's tough, but had to be done. But I know I can't go the rest of my life avoiding chocolate. I freaking love it! So what I did was re-introduce it. Slowly. I bought a small block and allowed myself a certain amount with morning tea. And had an apple or cuppa afterwards so that I wouldn't have the lingering chocolate taste in my mouth and would feel full.

There were (and are still) slip-ups, I'm not denying that. But now I have no problem keeping the biscuit tin in the pantry stocked with chocolate-coated scotch fingers. Or a lot less of one, anyway. Keeping things in opaque containers and out of the direct line of sight (e.g. keep ice cream behind the peas or potato crisps on the bottom shelf) also helps. I find it a lot more difficult to resist a transparent container of cupcakes sitting proudly upon the kitchen bench than I do the scotch fingers hiding behind the tinned tomatoes.

Best of luck to you :flowerforyou:

If you don't want to remove greek yogurt completely, just buy less containers each time you go grocery shopping. Greek yogurt is one food that I can eat all day since I make instant cheesecake filling with it using Fat-free /sugar-free Jello cheesecake pudding mix. I can easily eat an entire day's worth of calories if I add granola to each serving. To avoid eating too many each day, I only buy five containers to last me for 5 days - that's how frequent I shop. I'm discouraged to eat more because it would be inconvenient to run to the store more frequently.

i don't binge but I do tend to overeat raw almonds for some unknown reason. for this reason I prefer when my husband doesn't pick them up when we are at the market and I take efforts to that end. i feel like i can't have them around. or shouldn't. I do not have an eating disorder and only share my story with you so you may compare what it's like for someone without one versus someone with one and gain perspective on your own path. :flowerforyou:
  • Thank you comparable yes all helpful!! I don't have an eating disorder diagnosis but a big sweet tooth diagnosis yes ????

If it's within your calories & you like it, why change.
  • You mention hypoglycemia... Maybe you could talk with your doctor about some late night snack options that would help your medical condition but not mess with your calorie limit of the day. I personally had to completely stop buying all things that I couldn't eat in moderation. Examples are: skinny cow ice cream, goldfish crackers, chips of any kind even popchips, dried fruit, cashews, candy and cookies, and popsicles. I also had to start keeping my yogurt at work so I wouldn't binge on it at home.

Try eating a banana. (Or some other piece of fruit) It's way better for you than yogurt, it's low glycemic impact, it has micro-nutrients, and fiber. Also, it's super convenient. There is no mess or dishes.
  • I had to throw out wine as this was my binge item that led to overeating. I wanted to be able to have one glass and include it in my calories but... it always led to 2 then 3 etc. Then I would eat. Yesterday, I poured all the wine down the drain. Yes, I have to keep the trigger foods out of the house.

I have to be careful with laughing cow cheese! YUM! That is my binge food. lol. So when I buy them, I take one out of the package and put it the rest in the crisping drawer so I can't see them. Other wise I will eat them all at once! LOL Self control sucks. :)

personally id change it plain greek yogurt and frozen/thawed berries add a bit of sweetener (your choice), for some reason it's easier to binge on those prepackaged yogurts then if you have to make it.

If it causes you to binge, then you should get rid of it and find out why. If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, have an apple, mango or some fruit that you like. it really is trial and error. I have had issues in the past with cereal, peanut butter, bread, jelly, greek yogurts that have sweetened fruit. Foods that by itself seem harmless, but have cause uncontrollable eating. You might want to get the plain greek yogurt and buy some berries, because the chobanis and haagen daz both have 30g of sugar. That made me stop buying them. I know the yogurt is healthy, but too much sugar is damaging to the body so I try to limit it

Look up glycemic load and you will see that your statement is incorrect. Neither foods are 'better' than the other. Both are suitable foods as part of a balanced diet, and each contain macro and micronutrients, although bananas could cause problems in individuals with CKD.

OP, I enjoy my sweet treat at night too and Greek yogurt is one of my favourites. I buy a big tub of plain Greek yogurt and make it last the week. I usually have it over grated apple or thawed berries, or papaya etc. I always put it in a nice bowl and spend time preparing it so that I'm less likely to go back for seconds. I have found that changing my behaviour regarding how I enjoy it (no eating directly out of the tub and buying 1 week supply) helps me control the urge to overheat it.

I think you already know the answer. Remove the binge food.
