Difference between working out in the morning & at night?

I heard that working out after waking up increases your metabolism the whole day but working out in the morning (especially early morning) is hard for me because of course I'd be groggy and what not. Unless I'm super motivated. But that rarely happens.
So I usually work out around lunch time (when my schedule permits because I have class) and/or at night (mostly, after dinner time)
Am I getting less benefits from working out if I work out at night? Just want to confirm things.
And any pointers for working out at night? Thanks!
