Spinning Class Advice Wanted

I am going to be brave and go to my very first spinning class tomorrow morning, I was wondering if there was any advice that I could get on etiquette, what the class is like, can beginners do it? What should I ask before starting the class of the instructor or anything? Really, never taken this class before but I think I might like it, so any insight would be appreciated.

You should definitively tell the instructor that it's your first class and ask him/her to help you adjust the bike. Make sure you have water and enjoy the ride!0

I love spinning. Beware you probably will have a sore rear end for the 1st couple of sessions though! Beginners are fine with it. You can keep the bike on a lower setting to what the instructor sets the group when you first start out. Tell the instructor it's the first class you have done, and she will probably just check you don't have any injuries so forth. My class is a 45 min one. When I get there I go in & get warmed up by just rotating the bike without increasing the resistance. Enjoy! :bigsmile:

I would just say get there with plenty of time and the instructer will probably have 5 mins 1:1 with you. They can show you how to adjust and talk you through things.

I took a spinning class at my school. Definitely tell the instructor it's your first time and they'll help you with setting up the bike. It's really fun though. Just remember to pace yourself, and if you can't do some of the more intense intervals at first, it's ok. Heck, I got to the end and still couldn't keep up with some of the more athletic members of the group. As long as you keep a steady pace and do what you feel comfortable with, you'll be fine.

I took my first spinning class last Monday....
I went back Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday ! Its so much fun and totally addictive. I was very nervous and scared the first time, but the instructor was helpful and it wasn't hard to get the hang of it.
yes, your butt is gonna hurt a little.
take water and a towel, you will need both.

By all means, give it a try! I've been going to spin classes for about 14 years and am completely addicted. Like the others said, be sure and bring lots of water and maybe a small hand towel. And keep in mind that it's okay to adjust the tension and not go at it quite as hard as the regulars in class. Really. No one will notice at all and it's your workout. Do what feels best. But most of all, have fun with it and let us know what you think!:flowerforyou:0

Ummmm OMG! I might die or vomit or both. I went, I rode, I was no where near the other people in class. And the class is small and apparently they have been riding together for a while and today they found out six bikes were removed so every one was mad and I felt like an intruder in their "group". It was good though, I am already looking forward to Wednesday. I will have to get there earlier to get a bike now that every one knows you have to sign in, but I will. By January I will be riding like the rest of them.
Seriously though, how do I stop the nausea. I don't think I have ever worked that hard in a workout ever, well, once in a Les Mills PUMP class, that one will make you vomit.0 -
You might try to eat something light before you go and then eat your meal afterward. Too much food in the stomach during an intense workout can make you feel sick. Also, try sipping water and don't drink it too fast. If I do, I tend to get a bit nauseous.
Oh, I forgot about how territorial people can be about "their" bikes. People tend to develop favorite bikes if they have been going to class for a while. Don't worry about it. You have every right to be there and get in your workout as well.
I"m so glad you liked the class. Even though I've been going to spinning classes for over a decade, I still find the classes to be intense. Which is good, I guess because if they weren't a challenge then I wouldn't get in a good workout! It is a great cardio workout, isn't it?:flowerforyou:0 -
Not your fault the gym doesn't have enough bikes, especially if they just removed several. If whiny whiners want to whine about not getting a bike, they should whine to the gym ownership (or just get there earlier).
Once you get used to the bike settings, you can more easily moderate your personal workout to be appropriate for your fitness level. It's not a competition with anything but the mirror. Good luck.0
