hi there,

so today I was at the gym and burned 103 cals on the exercise bike (speed range from 19.7 kmph to 26.2 kmph) and then I burned 304 cals on the cross trainer.
When I input the time and what effort level, mfp tells me I burned far more than the machine at the gym told me.

Any idea which one is correct? Many thanks

Every machine you get on will give you a different output, and MFP will give you a different number again

My advice would be to get a heart rate monitor, at least then you'll be consistent.

Calories burned is not a very exact science. If you didn't put your weight in on the machines at the gym, that is the least accurate count. The following factors effect calories burned:

    Weight
    Age
    Metabolism
    Effort

Machines track effort, but not always weight and age. Nothing tracks metabolism. But you can see why none of the counts from a machine or MFP will be accurate (MFP doesn't know your actual effort). I take Zumba, burns lots of calories, but I have seen women in class take it, barely put in any effort and think that they burned the same calories I did. Doesn't work that way.

Invest in a good HRM...then manually input the stats on MFP.
