MFP family I need some advice. Today we will be adding a new addition to our family....Yoshi, a 10month old AKC registered Yorkie!!! While I am so excited I am also not sure what to expect. So maybe you can help. I know from the previous owner that he is house broken (exactly how house broken remains to be seen). So I was thinking of getting a crate to put him in when we are not home until he acclimates to his new surroundings. I am also thinking I probably need those little pee-pad things (not sure what they're called). But his toys and other essentials are going to be passed on by his owner, even his vet papers and we plan on using the same vet he is already familiar with. But what else do I need to do to make sure that his transition is a smoothe one? And no I do not have any other pets in the home and this is our 1st dog since I was a child. I do have a fenced in backyard for him to play in, but of course he is not an outside dog (that would be cruel), but should I be letting him out back to do his business or will this mess up my yard? I plan to walk him daily so that won't be a problem. Please help, any advice you can offer or other items you think I may need would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Crates are a great idea, my four dogs are in them when I am not at home. I would suggest not using the puppy pads, I know of very few dogs (and I know alot) that have had success with them. Going in the yard will be okay, just make sure you clean up afterwards.

Please post some pictures when you get him!

As someone with 3 dogs can i just say don't use the pee pads. One of our dogs was trained using the pee pads and now thinks that anything laying on the ground is a pee pad. It was and is very hard to break that habit. My dogs use the crates and they are very helpful. Have fun with your new addition. I love my "babies" and wouldn't trade for the world!

Crate training is an excellent idea. It will also serve as the dogs "safe" place. Our beagle goes into his "house" when thunderstorms are around. Start it from day one! Use treats. I would stay away from the pee pad idea. As TammyBee commented, if they get used to peeing inside, then it will be difficult to break. Make sure the crate is just large enough for the dog to turn around in and stand up. Dogs will not go to the bathroom in their area. But anything bigger and they will go in the corner of one crate and then lay in the other. We had 3 different size crates for our Mastiff due to the size difference as she grew. You will probably be able to just buy one crate and be good for the life of the dog since it's a small breed.

Just remember....Consistency is the key!! Make sure they know you are alpha! Good Luck!!!

I've had 2 yorkies. I wont own another bread ever. Love them! The first did not use pee pads. He was walked every 4-6 hours. When he got older every 2-4. He was the best. We trained him to do everything under the sun!

This second one is the cutest little monster. He has failed out of doggy school 2 times already. Kicked out of 2 classes as well. He will be starting his 3rd try at it in October at another place. He will not pee outside even when walked. He will only use a pee pad. But he has stage frieght. We need to make sure we leave the room every so often. If not he'll hide and do it if he cant hold hit.

He is getting a lot better. I myself dont like the crate thing. We did it for about a month but he cried everyday. My grandmother lived down stairs. So instead of a crate he got the run of the kitchen and when we came home we added a room until he could be trusted through out the house. At bed time he goes back into the kitchen with his bed under the table. By morning it is inside out and hes 1/2 in 1/2 out.

Congrats! I have 2 Malteses and 1 Yorkie - we got the Yorkie when she was 8 months old. I too would suggest skip the pee pee pads and just go straight training outside. I would also double check the fence at the bottom - my Malteses were my first venture into small dogs and I learned quick that they can scoot out under the fence, put any bricks, wood whatever in any spots that seem like they can scoot out under. I got a dog cage and I just leave the door open and they just go in there when they want their own "me" time. Plus you will now have a buddy to walk with, mine just love their walks - Enjoy your new family member!
