Tip controversy - Hoax or misunderstanding?

Just read the following story on MSN. A gay female server posted on Facebook that instead of receiving a tip she was left a note that the customer didn't support her lifestyle. She posted a picture of the receipt showing a line through the tip amount and the note. The customer contacted a news station about the allegation. The showed a picture of the receipt that had a $18 tip written on it, along with the total amount. Their credit card statement confirms that the higher amount was indeed charged.

The server has been receiving tips and donations to the wounded warrior project.

Do you think the server was trying to pull off some type of hoax or is this a misunderstanding of some sort?

From my experience, any problem involving just the tip, is not a misunderstanding. Most likely willful deceit.

She is sticking to her story, which the restaurant originally supported. Now they are investigating it further.

The only other scenario I can come up with would involve a "pay at register" instead of the server handling the transaction. If the cashier noticed the customer forgot to right the amount on the "merchant copy," they could have run the card for the appropriate amount and pocketed the tip money then wrote the note.

Curious if anyone is familiar with that restaurant and whether a cashier or server handles the checks??

I'd love to see the receipt for the charity donation, although she'd probably forge that as well.

I cant recall of one instance where I was friendly enough with my server to inquire or learn about their particular lifestyle.

I guess I just dont give enough fks or am living life completely wrong.

the patrons have their copy of the receipt and their credit card bill showing that the restaurant charged them for the full amount (including the tip they claim they gave).

Sounds like the server pilled a fast one, but I suppose if all the money went to a good cause, it evens out?

I like this theory. Hostess/cashier hates that waitress. Unassuming couple/fam comes in and are pawns in their strife. Explains why hostess says to expect "Dan" and also the note and knowing the lifestyle and pretty much the whole thing wraps up in a bow now. Except....waitress sets up paypal. Hmmmmmmmmmm? one thread undone.

they wouldn't know, but i have seen people leap to conclusions based solely on looks (and sometimes less info than that) all over the place.

I suppose it's possible she mentioned a "girlfriend" in passing chit-chat in a way that context made it clear the GF was an SO and not just a friend, though.

The couple asked NBC not to reveal their names. Not sure why that would matter if the server revealed this information on FB. According to the story, they came forward because the story wasn't going away and they wanted people to know the money they were donating was under false pretenses.

this would have been so easy for the server to pull off- as a server, you run the credit cards throught the machine that charges- it is possible to reprint checks... she probably reprinted a check, and wrote on the duplicate.

There is an easy way to prove whether or not she received the tip- at the end of a shirt, the servers have to reconcile all thier credit card charges in the machine- the tip had to have been added in at the reconciliation stage, or the charge would have shown up on the credit card statement at the original amount.

If you want the video of the news confronting her, she can't give any answers- she is busted and she knows it....

If you look under the red circle on the reciept to the right, it says: 11/13 19:19 93.55 and it says Customer Copy so it would have already been processed through the terminal.

You provide a great explanation for how she could have pulled it off, but what is still unclear is why the restaurant originally supporter her story. They should have been able to easily tell whether or not the lower amount was processed.
