a conversation with a supplment guy....

ok... was speaking to a guy who owns his own suppliment store...he mentioned his university degree ect...

:indifferent: he said i would become box-y doing powerlifts/ compound lifts (i'm doing strong lifts) ... mayby because i'm 100kgs/220lbs he said this...

:indifferent: and also said not to eat fats and carbs together, because of insulin makes you not burn fat... or somthing like that ...

so im pretty sure, on a deficit stronglifts is not gonna make me box-y (squarish rather then slim down and retain muscle...) but comming from HIM it was a bit of a shock.... lol..

the other thing though... my thoughts ... it would be very very difficult to do, and unnessesary ?.... but i dont have any degrees in fitness or nutrition....

discuss...

Reminds me of when I dumped my ex Personal Trainer cause he was making me do so much cardio i wanted to cut my wrists. He was also having me on a 1000 cals a day diet with no cards except a banana but ONLY pre workout eating every 2 hours and nothing after 8pm.

I dumped his *kitten* and started lifting heavy with no cardio at all. He came to see me to tell me I shouldn't do that or else I was gonna bulk.

He told me he was sorry about a week ago

I lift heavy and I started lifting when I was much heavier. Best decision ever. (I know I look "manly" in my picture, but it's only because of my very low body fat from bodybuilding competitions).

Thermogenics are a waste. You can get aminos from your food if you eat meat.

No, supplements aren't necessary (unless you're deficient in something, I suppose).

220 pounds (100kg). It took me 3 years to lose all the weight because I struggle with diet and binge eating.

i normally do try and eat something after.... is that all bs ?? normally a banana, but its not within any time frame. just when ever i get it...

Nutrient timing is irrelevant. Hit your totals for the day, don't worry about timing it around workouts.

^^ this is why he probably told you you would get "boxy" etc. He wants to sell you on his products is my guess, maybe he even believes what he said, but he's wrong. I have more education and degrees that directly apply (I'm not going to say in what and you shouldnt believe anyone over the net anyways, so it makes no difference). I'm just pointing this out to "cancel" any perceived authority you think he may have from his "degree", he is just wrong at best, selling you at worst. Thermogenics havent been proven to make much if any difference, and there is a wide variety of substances used in these: you definitely dont NEED them. Amino acids you also dont NEED if you get complete proteins, and you can do this by eating a variety of foods and meats or planning to match appropriate vegetarian protein sources to cover all amino acids. So no you dont need that either. That being said, sometimes the "pick me up" from caffeine in "thermogenics" can make you feel like going when you otherwise may not: I think that is probably more a possible benefit than the "fat burning" they are marketed for. But you can drink coffee for that, or green tea.

The key for my weight loss was to just to find my TDEE using an online calculator and subtract 20%. Then just stick with it while trying to eat lots of protein. The program that worked best for me was Lee Labrada's 12 week lean body trainer. Stick with this. Even if you don't think you are making progress keep trying. It is possible.

Here's the thing, scales are an evil invention from hell and really if you want to rely on something it's measurements and pictures!
I can weight more or less as much as 10lbs on the scale from one week to another but yet measurement are the same.

Eat at a deficit and lift, moderate cardio can be incorporated if you like it but is not necessary for weight loss as it all comes down to calories in vs out (ie, calorie deficit)

Supplements are, for the most part a waste of money.

Meal/snack timing is irrelevant. Eat when you are hungry and enjoy the things you like making sure you hit your macros and calories.

Last but most important, be patient, you are on your way to success

What's the old saying...."Beware of Greeks bearing gifts." I'll refrain from giving any advice on weight loss, because deep down you know what is right. But this guy's--degree or no degree--only purpose in life is to sell supplement products, so naturally in this instance he is boasting about his degree as a sales pitch. I want to call him an idiot, but he's doing his job and I must respect that. My personal recommendation is a whey protein supplement if you can't get it from food. I have taken no other supplements during my journey and I have seen awesome results so far. Keep up the good work.

Most of it is rubbish with a couple of good points:
Aminos, if you at deficit and lifting it might be worth adding some BCAA pre and intra just to save the gaines / prolonge the anabolic state.
Fats / carbs he probably means post work out avoid fats. He is right and this is not bro science but pure demonstrate science. Fats slow down metabolism and hence overall digestion. Straight after a workout in order to maximise your gains you need to eat carbs and proteines. Fats are unecessary and might to a certain extent counter act.
  • still couldnt i just eat some eggs or tuna? and after eat a banana.. rather then get suppliments?

No, for a young person who is eating well (and in sufficient quantities), supplements are not really necessary--with a few EXCEPTIONS. If you live in a Northern climate (anything north of Virginia) you are bound to be Vitamin D deficient over the winter (you manufacture vitamin D in your skin, in response to sunlight). Unless you are into taking cod liver oil every day, you must use a vitamin D supplement. Also, if you are drinking fluoridated water, unless you are eating a LOT of seafood, you may be deficient in iodine as well (in the absence of sufficient quantities of iodine, fluoride can fill the iodiine receptor sites in the thyroid gland--leading to some level of thyroid gland dysfunction). A lot of people take a good multi-vitamin supplement (inquire at you local health food store) as "insurance" against deficiencies of one sort or another. Be aware that a surplus in one vitamin can lead to a deficit in another.

LOL--well then, that's a different kettle of fish. One other thought on the vitamin D. I know that Australians use a lot of sunscreen. It is important to note that, ironically, people who use sunscreen every time they are out in the sun can also be deficient in vitamin D (sunscreen blocks the manufacture of vitamin D in the skin). Before supplementing, you probably should get your doc to check your vitamin D levels. A healthy level is around 60 ng per ml of blood. Many people in the most northerly part of the Northern Hemisphere are deficient most of the year. They often have levels of 20 ng/ml or lower in the winter--woefully inadequate. Causes a lot of health problems, unless they use supplements--which, happily, many now do, under the advice of their docs.
