So a lot of websites suggest instead of setting a weight loss goal try to set a goal to compete in something. Sign up, pay the fee, tell everyone you'll be competing to make sure you stick with plan.

Most of the websites suggest a 5K. I doubt I will ever run a 5K with my knees and weight and smoking so I need another idea.

What are some good types of events I could train for as a goal for say 8 months from now in the summer/fall?

Sign up for a 5K. Maybe it will inspire you to lose weight which will make your knees feel better and you'll be able to do it a lot easier if you quit smoking!

We are quiting on June 13th for my fiances 30th birthday (it will be easier to do together and she is not ready yet).

I mean I don't run at the gym because it hurts my knees and calves so bad. I think a 5K might be hard to manage since I don't even run or walk at the gym. I do elyptical typically.
