Green Tea

Hello.
I know to lose weight you have to be in a caloric deficit and all of that, etc.
I was just wondering if, while already in a constant and consistent caloric deficit, anything (in this case green tea) would encourage or speed up the process in any way?

It's proven to increase your metabolism by tiny amount. And I mean RALLY tiny amount, like 1 or 2% or something. So it's unlikely that you will notice any difference. But hey, give it a shot. Even if it does not help you it's still very healthy and tasty!0

I was wondering the same thing.0

As stated it will increase metabolism a very small amount, as will several other things. That means the effect will be small. Add to that the fact your body works hard to maintain your metabolism where it is, and usually that small increase is at best temporary as your body will accommodate it in time. The better way to increase metabolism is exercise, in particular strength training especially with heavy weights. The metabolism boost post exercise is likely larger than green tea or most other things are going to give you, and as your body adapts you increase the difficulty by increasing the weight so there is still that metabolism boost.0

Yeah, I already do 80-120 minutes of weight training plus 10-30 minutes of cardio, 5 or 6 days per week, but I was just wondering if things like green tea (and other 'fat burners' like capsaicin, conjugated linoleic acid, tetradecyl thioacetic acid, etc.), when added to training and a caloric deficit, would help me get rid of an extra few hundred calories a week, or burn off an extra pound of fat a month.
I know, when it comes to most of the high priced 'fat burners', such results, if possible, wouldn't be worth the money, whereas something like green tea might be more useful to me.0 -
I've been drinking green tea for several years now and haven't really noticed a difference - and this is on up to 8 cups a day. But it can help to control my appetite, if that's a problem for you - especially the flavoured blends. I think coffee has a similar metabolic effect but again, it's not really significant unless perhaps you wanted to control your appetite or give yourself a boost before a particularly intense workout (work harder = burn more cals?).0

It just makes me feel good. I didn't notice it speeding up my weight loss though.0

Yeah I know, and I'm on track with my diet an exercise, probably better than I ever have been, and have always included resistance training in my exercise.
I am trying to lose 0.5-1lb per week, and have lost 5lbs over the last 4 weeks, so all is good in terms of burning fat and being in a caloric deficit, I just thought if I drank green tea throughout the day, perhaps I would have lost, for example, 5.5lbs instead, with the same amount of calories and exercise.
It doesn't seem much difference, but it all adds up and makes life easier.0 -
It typically makes me hungry unfortunately, lol.0

I drink Green Tea every day since I started dieting (17 day diet). I find it helps me to not feel so hungry all the time. As for increasing the metabolism I have no clue. Since I have a hypothyroid I'll try anything. Another benefit is it helps to lower cholesterol. With that being said, I work out every day. I run at least 30-40 min and do strength/ resistance training. I also count and watch everything I eat.0

I wouldn't say it'd be enough to notice. Keep up the good work and don't worry about it.0

Green tea has a lot of other health benefits, so it's definitely worth adding it to your regular routine.0

Do you run and strength train EVERY day? Might be beneficial to have at least one rest day a week...? Just a thought.0 -
I vary what I do from one day to the next never doing the same area 2 days in a row.I also do a cardio only day every 4th day. I plan 1 day off every 2 weeks. If I feel like I need an extra day off I take it. Since I have a hypothyroid I cannot take too much time off or I will not loose and sometimes even gain.0

Mayo clinic has a good article on metabolism: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/metabolism/WT00006
The upshot is that the best way to increase metabolism is to build muscle, and the best way to lose weight is to eat less calories than your TDEE.
Green tea is tasty and has other benefits, though, so it's not bad to add to your diet.0
