Nutrition and Weight loss are not synonymous

I see so much about nutrition wanted to share my experience because I don’t like eating the way most nutritionist tell me to eat.
The people I have helped and have tried to help always started to lose weight with the idea of “OK I am going to starting eating healthy.” Then when I ask what that looks like they they barely can stand to look at it. I completely understand this. I hate diets and I don’t want to live without eating ice cream everyday if I want and I usually don’t. Below is what I ate yesterday and the first thing I tell people that are trying to lose weight is Nutrition and Weight loss are not the same thing. If you are trying to lose weight you should put food (and other activities you do) into did they translate into weight loss for you. For some and I put myself in the category going on some type of health diet never translated into weight loss for me. I am not talking about dropping pounds to gain it back. I am talking real weight loss that has held for a period of time. Most of us have lost weight to gain it back, but I need a program I can live with the rest of my life.

While true, it's a better approach to try to ensure you reach nutritional values for optimum health and performance. While I don't eat "clean" at all, I personally make sure to reach my macro/micro nutrient profiles each day along with some "junk". 80-20 works for me.

Nutrition and Weight loss are not synonymous.

That's a bit like saying weight loss and fat loss are not the same thing. While the statement is true, if we leave out any sort of larger context or conclusion/suggestion/philosophy then there's not really much point in bringing it up.
  • Although a lot of people may know this already. I certainly did not and the idea of losing weight always looked awful. To start looking at food to as to whether it translated into weight loss was an important switch for me. Not if someone else deemed it good or bad.
I don't know if something is good or bad for me unless I log it and track it. If eating a Twinkie translates into weight loss for me. Then eating a Twinkie when it comes to weight loss is good.
My point is not whether it is nutritious or not.

Am I healthier if eating a Twinkie everyday translated into me weighing 25-30 pounds lighter.

No. The number on the scale isn't everything.

Just means you're terrible at gaining weight.

Some of you guys are lost. You can eat a twinkie everyday and lose weight, and it will look like you lost weight. Even if you only ate a banana, if you didn't stay within calories, you would gain. -.-

I'd say this is pretty obvious because weight loss is mostly related to calories. However, I don't think this should be used as an excuse to eat poorly, because you're opening yourself up to other health and nutrition-related issues.

While I can somewhat agree with you in that weight loss in it's most simplistic form is calories in vs calories out. However, voiding the body of nutrients it needs isn't advised. The body needs Minerals and Vitamins (Micro Nutrients) in order to perform many functions and a deficit of any of these have been linked to many diseases and illnesses. By not providing the body with these nutrients, you are basically telling the body that you don't want it to perform said function. That being said, most people aren't going to be nutrient deficient, however, it is still something to be at least aware of.

"Nutrition* and Weight loss are not synonymous" is basically the main argument against 1200kcal diets. Because while it may work, it comes at the cost of depriving the body of sufficient nutrition, aside from difficulties of moving to maintenance later on- the "less is better" attitude is exactly why diets are diets: they fail.

*Nutritious diet = hitting minimum macros most of the days
Nutritious diet /= "clean" eating by any definition, shaming certain foods and reducing a nutrient to ridiculous numbers for no reason

So, eat what you like, stay within goals?

We've been saying that for years and years.
  • I don't believe that all calories in are = I know that for example if I eat less sugar and more protein I can eat more calories. I know this because I know my equation to health, but my equation to health is not eating some stringent diet.

The only person that can figure out your equation to health is you and it is done by logging, tracking and analyzing. I dislike the fitness/diet worlds talking points of the day. I am just a regular joe that wants to feel and look healthy.

If you eat less sugar which is a carb which equals 4 cals per you eat the same amount of protein which is 4 cals per. The only other is fats which is 9 cals per.
