    Item 10. Shoes or Boots

3.10.1 Lifting shoes or boots shall be worn. They may be of any color or colors.
3.10.2 Shoes shall be taken to include boots; sport shoes, trainer’s gymnastic slippers or any foot
covering that has a patterned molding or foot type outline that provides an inner sole.
3.10.3 Shoes with metal spikes or metal cleats are not permitted.

I copy/pasted this from the USPLA rule book. So pretty much they dont care, as long as your wearing SOMETHING (But your lift is gonna suck if you wear running shoes or say, Romeos  ) Some people even wear ballet slippers.
Haha thanks again for the input judging from responses in other forums there seem to be mixed feelings on the matter so I'm still going to give deadlifting in oly shoes a shot just to see how it feels for myself (won't be chasing after any PRs obviously).

And @ the ballet slippers remark, I know someone who lifts at my gym in them! It all makes sense now!

The biggest hitch about pulling in Vibrams in comp would be that you are generally required to wear socks, also. A lot of people buy their vibrams to fit barefoot.

There are some awesome knee high toe socks!

I'm also piping in because I love the concrete/bed analogy.

I lift in converse that I think I need to replace.
My gym has two platforms and I'm concerned about sliding since my shoes are almost bald tires.
I saw a dude deadlifting in his socks on the platform and I don't know how he didn't slide around lol

I find cheap shoes are the best as it's like standing on bare floor - the "rubber" is so hard and lacks shock-absorption. Awful for running in, perfect for lifting in. My £20 Slazenger tennis court shoes seem to be perfect - enough grip, good support, hard sole. I also have a £7 pair of "trainers" that I've had for so long the stitching is coming out so I don't wear it when it's raining. :D
  • Being that my gym is at home I DL barefoot

some weeks I do cause I generally follow up my deadlifts with front squats and i just dont feel like taking the shoes off - plus then when I try a PR pull barefoot it seems much easier - I try to tell myself its like training with a small deficit

brandon lilly the powerlifter who developed the cube method actually trains deads in adipowers

Flat soled New Balance, similar to knock-off, low heeled Chucks.

Pretty much these without the green:

I bought a pair of Skora Base minimalist running shoes to try for running and figured out that I need some cushion when running! I will say that they give me the best feeling foundation for squats and deadlifts compared to my xtrainers and runners.

    I lift barefoot for deadlifts.

Most other lifts I wear my converse.

 Old, OLD school "gymnasium" in the original sense!
I need lots of specialized footwear, depending on the task:
    Deadlift - Chucks
    Lunges - 5-fingers
    Squat - lifting shoes
    jogging - flat-soled Nike (Eclipse?)
    yoga - barefoot, duh!
    everything else can be whatever

Can you tell I have a shoe fetish?!

I lift barefoot. One of the benefits of doing it at home.

    Me too.
