some recent Dell laptops have used some components that smell like cat urine for the first few months of use. FYI.

I just bought an HP Envy Sleekbook and I'm really happy with it. I'd had a couple Dells before, but I don't really have a brand preference. It was just the best deal I could find. I've never bought myself a computer before, I generally just fix up other people's old junk, so it was quite a treat.
When I bought the laptop, I got a squaretrade warranty with it. I heard a lot of good things about it.
What are you looking to do with your laptop? Is it mostly Facebook+email? Work?
I tried a Windows 8 laptop for about a week and I wanted to throw it out the window. When I got this one I had to make sure it was using Windows 7.0 -
Lenovo followed by ASUS. ASUS is rated as the best company in regards of returns. They have the least amount of returned products. I've had Gateway, Dell, Sony, and ASUS...ASUS so far has been the best overall product I've used.
Apple still makes the best one, but also one of the most expensive.
Bottom line...ASUS is my recommendation.0 -
I've heard that about Windows 8. I wonder if I can request Windows 7?
It would be a home laptop. I'm not really a gamer, so it doesn't need to be anything crazy.0 -
We've had good experiences with Asus laptops for family home use.0

I'm shopping for one for my daughter.
Depends on budget, expected usage (just web browsing; or gaming), whether you need portability most or screen space most etc...
I have a MacBook Pro, and love it. But for daughter, I'll probably be getting Windows 8. Which means it needs a touchscreen too. HP, Toshiba, Asus are all OK. I've had Dell before, and they work too. I'd decide on the specs and find one that meets your needs/can afford rather than narrowing down to a certain brand.0 -
i got chromebook 2 months ago and so far so good0

Macbook would be my first suggestion if you have the money. I love mine.
Otherwise Lenovo or if you're on a budget, Acer. Dell sucks big time and isn't worth the money.0 -
microsoft surface is the next laptop tablet i'm getting.0

Toshiba, all the way. I love my Toshiba laptop. I've had it for 3 years, and still no problems.0

I love Acer! I have had one of mine for 7 years and it is still going fine. I only have the second one (also an acer) as it is a notebook.0
