Yesterday I had a deep tissue massage. Happy Christmas to me, I know, right???
I prepared for it by nixing all forms of caffeine yesterday (no coffee, *gasp*) and drinking over a gallon of water. I also did a few stretches to relax in the room before she came back in. I did the deep breathing thing. I just couldn't relax. Afterwards, I drank another gallon of water.
BUT
Today, I am fairly miserable. :ouch:
The base of my skull is tender and feels bruised. I have a headache from hell. And my neck, back, and shoulders are super tight. It's worse than it was before the massage. I've only had one coffee and been sucking down the water thinking it is crap being released into my system.
Today I feel like an :oldguy:.
I'm not new to massages and do get them several times a year, around once a quarter. Anyone have any ideas?

I am a student of massage with 6 years experience in Swedish and Deep Tissue and I can tell you that the muscles that are deep and right beneath the base of the skull can be quite sensitive to getting over worked and she may have done more harm than good. My suggestion, once the acute pain has subsided, would be to see a Trigger Point therapist who can resolve hidden tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back/chest with particular attention to the Scalenes. And next time, ask them to go a little easier on you back there.0
