Unless he's an serious lifter, an inexpensive 300-pound Olympic barbell set is probably just fine and will last him a lifetime. The brands don't matter that much at the lower price points. You could probably find a new set for $200. You can probably find a used set for $20 if you cruise a lot of garage sales.

You can spend thousands of dollars on weights if you want. Bumper plates, plates with grips, bars with varying knurling or stiffness, high-quality bearings, ... Honestly, all those features are nice, but I don't think they are worth the extra cash when you're on a budget.

I don't know enough about benches to recommend anything specific. If I had the room for it, I'd rather have a power rack than a bench, especially if he's going to workout at home without a spotter. But a power rack might be a little out of your price range.

I hear the pink ones are in kilograms, which are lighter than pounds.

And OP, I'd research Walmart, Amazon, Target and such. Once you find things within your budget, check out the reviews. There are usually a lot of them. If one site doesn't have a lot of reviews, check the same product on another for more.

Get an Olympic weight bench. I got a weight bench cheap because it came with an olympic bar and plates on Craiglist. It is not wide enough. The bar holders are very narrow and hold the bar right where my hands go.

You don't know... Maybe they're looking for ballroom weight benches, like those "ballroom" jeans!

This is obviously no power rack setup, but it's in your price range new, with room left over for a bar and plates. If you're an Amazon Prime member, free shipping ftw.

That and a 300-pound Oly weight set from Sears set me back just about $300, and it's good enough for a few years of progress at minimum. The bench and rack are both a little tall for me - just right for an average or taller guy.

If you can find an olympic set for $20, pick it up and I'll come get it lol.

I ended up buying that bench from Walmart (same price I checked) and the 110 lb weight set and 40 lb dumbbell set! I also got a kettle ball so it was around 350 for everything shipped directly to my door. I am happy with this. Thanks for the help!
