I don't think the events themselves are excuses, if we're talking about New Year's and Halloween and such. If people want to drink they will drink whether there is an event or not. My friends throw parties just because and those ARE just so they can get together and drink. I think that these holiday events are celebratory and many people have parties... the way most adults party is to drink. But it is also about getting together, sharing food, catching up and having fun (regardless of whether you're drinking). I've been sober at many parties and had plenty of fun. I've also been drinking at parties and have had just as much fun.

Watch the movie......How Beer Saved the World. It's very clever and funny.

    It starts with:

Why was barley the first grain domesticated? (i.e. it was beer that motivated the development of agriculture).

There are quite a few kinds of animals that have a "taste" for alcohol. Some even can become alcoholic.

Because spending another hour sober with those boring sods you call relatives/ in-laws/ coworkers/ business clients/ etc. seems foolish when you can enlist the magic of alcohol to make them far more bearable.

You do know that Johnny Appleseed planted apple trees across the United States just to make hard apple cider, don't you?

I just love home made Apple Jack!

Because people will drink whether they have an excuse or not, but an excuse makes it more socially acceptable. Friend pulls out a flask in the library while studying --> gets judged. Friends pull out flasks after our engineering final --> not judged. :drinker:

    It is for amateurs.

Us true drinkers need no excuse.

    something I've often pondered.
It sounds more like certain events are used by certain people as an excuse to drink booze. Perhaps the problem is those people, not 'events' that need to be blamed for personal choices.

The thing is, no drunk is nearly as interesting to others as they are to themselves.

Because those situations can prove to be awkward and lots of people need alcohol to loosen up a little? Probably.
