For me, I only count actual plain water as my water intake. I don't consider tea, coffee or even flavored enhanced water in my diary as water intake.

Thank you...............someone else that exhibits some common sense.

Thank you both for your truthful answers!!! Anytime you add something to plain water it alters the way the body will digest, use, absorb it!

We should be drinking at least 64 ounces of pure water per day in addition to what other fluids we are intaking.

Do you drink that much distilled water? Even distillation does not remove everything which is not hydrogen monoxide.

    .

Dihydrogen monoxide!! I don't advise taking in lots of OH-!!

Edit: here are the NHS guidelines.
    "
    How much should I drink?

Studies have tried to establish a recommended daily fluid intake, but it can vary depending on the individual and factors such as age, climate and physical activity.

Some UK-based studies recommend that adults should drink 1.2 litres (6-8 glasses of water) a day to replace lost fluids and prevent dehydration.

A good rule is to drink enough fluid so that you're not thirsty for long periods, and to steadily increase your fluid intake when exercising and during hot weather.

You should drink plenty of fluid if you have symptoms of dehydration, such as feeling thirsty and lightheaded, or passing dark-coloured urine. It is also important to replace fluid lost after an episode of diarrhoea."

In short, there is no need to drink a lot of water if you are not thirsty. If your urine is a pale yellow, it indicates you are not dehydrated, and that's all that matters. The source of H2O doesn't really matter either, although some drinks are slightly less better at hydrating due to a diuretic effect (and have calories besides).

Other liquids are just other fluids but they are no longer water.

So when I pour 8 oz of boiling water in a mug and add something to it, what does the water "become"?

Is it OK for me to drink a glass of water and then eat a tea bag or does it cease to be water if I do that?

Water + a tea bag is tea. You are not that narrow minded.
Well, yes, we call it tea. But how does the water you added cease to be water? That's what you're saying, that the water isn't water because it's tea. But what is tea mostly made of? Why doesn't it count?

It is made with water but it can't be counted as water because water is merely one of the ingredients as it is altered the moment you add the tea bag. You can't say you are drinking water because you are drinking TEA.

You all do what you want to do. I will continue doing what my mom's kidney Dr always told her and what my dietician and my Dr's now tell me.
So when you add a tea bag, it isn't H2O anymore? What is it?

And why can't I count it if it's tea, but I can count it if I drink the water and eat the teabag after?

You are not that dense. It is tea. Not water. Do you normally drink brown water???? Green water??? NO, you drink tea or coffee or such. Water is used to make those things.

You are just acting ignorant to start an argument. Ignorance on these forums. You all have driven all the good folk away.

    I drink ohhh .. maybe 20 oz of "water only" a day. I'm well-hydrated.

Tea and water are functionally equivalent.

    Tap water, flouridated, chlorinated.
Bottled water, minerals added 'for taste'.

So now that we've established that you don't drink any pure water, we can quibble over the meaning of pure.

That sounds exactly like Paleo alright.

Sorry, but tea is still a source of H2O, which is chemically what your body needs. Diuretic effects are minor so it's basically equivalent. Why you'd log your fluid intake anyway I'm not sure, but to say they're completely different is just incorrect.

    The great water debate.

There are a lot of things we are taught in school that are very much wrong. Tea and coffee (etc) not having water the body can utilize is one of those wrong things. So, some people, even professionals, have outdated mythological information. Even milk has water in it. If only water counted for hydration there would be a lot more dead people. Some people prefer to drink a lot of water. I have that preference, but I still know that the other things I drink contribute to hydrating me. And on a day I choose a lot of green tea, I don't force feed myself more water than I need.

Exactly. Except they don't have to be non-caloric to count for hydration. You just have to make sure you also account for the calories.
