Starting a sport?

Hey guys! This is my first post and it's kinda personal, but not really. Here's the thing:
I've been on and off exercising for the past month or so (running, dance, swim, etc.) and been thinking about joining my community's softball team. To make the try outs, you have to be able to run a mile in under 10 minutes, which I'm working on.
My main problem is my mom. She's usually very supportive of everything I do, but with sports, it seems not so much. It's like she's supporting me, but still doesn't believe in me. She tells people 'oh, she's going to TRY to get on the softball team', with a pitying sigh.
She also tells me that even if I make the team that doesn't guarantee i won't be 'sitting on the bench every game' or 'even get to hit'. Also, that 'if anyone was to try out for the softball team without practice, they'd be a joke.' But, I know girls on the team and if I can make that run and do simple plays, I'll make it just fine. How can I ignore her getting down on me when it's something I need the most motivation in? And how do I work up from a 12 minute mile to a 10 minute one, in four weeks? Please help me! Thank you.

Cute dog! Looks just like mine.. Anyways the best thing you can do is just blank the negativity. In addition what you can do for yourself is to prove her wrong. If you already have friends who are on the team why don't you speak to them for some support/motivation? Maybe you could also go running with some of them to get your times up? Failing that just keep chipping away at the time. There's a lot of runners on here who can probably advise better though. Good luck OP.
