HELP!! Can I lose 18lbs by Christmas??

Ok, sue me for false advertising. But I got your attention. Sorry for the underhanded method. :flowerforyou:

But that question still sneaks into my head sometimes, although I have been an active daily member of MFP since February 2013. I have read the forums and sticky notes regarding healthy and sustainable weight loss. I have found through trial and error what works for me (TDEE - 25% and exercise). I have lost 34 pounds in 10 months - from 232lbs to 198lbs. And I have gained strength and cardiovascular endurance.

But when I think about the upcoming holidays with family - family that I haven't seen since I began my weightloss/fitness endeavors, that ridiculous thought pops into my brain. Why? Because back in February, when I created my profile I added my goals. Back then, before I had the knowledge that only experience can give me, I made the goal of weighing 180lbs by Christmas. Why? Because as they say, "A goal without a deadline is just a dream." So I made short term and long term goals for myself. Some I have accomplished already, some not and some goals had to be re-evaluated and given new deadlines.

Yesterday at lunch, as I frantically figured out how I was going to lose over 1 pound a day to meet my goal of 180lbs by Christmas (1000 cals/day and 5-6miles on the treadmill - will that do it??), I acknowledged the insanity. I realized that not meeting that goal (which very well may have been extremely optomistic - an average, continued weight loss of 1+lb/week) does not and will not negate the progress I have made thus far. I HAVE lost 33lbs. I CAN easily walk a 15 minute mile for 5-6 miles now, after starting out barely being able to cover one mile in 25 minutes. I CAN fit into size 16 jeans, down from size 22W. My results of my blood work HAVE improved, lowered cholestrol, A1c, blood pressure. I have achieved so much more that just losing a couple of pounds.

In my opinion, not bad for 10 months of effort. And if it takes me another 20 months to meet my "ultimate weight loss goal", guess what? I will get there. I will get there through consistent, daily effort fortified with committment to new life style. Because this is not a short term venture, so I can shock my family with my stunning new body at Christmas (ha!), nor is it to look good at my high school reunion or the fit into that awesome dress for a friends wedding. This is a long term venture, so I can still be strong and fit in 30+ years at age 80. And if it takes me another year or two to get there, guess what? I will reach my goal.

  • goals are great, but still just goals. Look at how well you have done and be proud of that. We know you will get to your goal in no time.
