Yeah, I'm slightly annoyed by PC stuff like that, but I don't think its serious unless people try to make it serious and act "offended" about it...I'd probably say Merry Christmas anyways, and if someone wants to reply Happy Kwanza, or Happy Winter Solstice, that's great too, its the spirit of the season, call it whatever you celebrate...or what you were raised on and no longer celebrate technically.0 -

What makes me mad about this is that the people that its suppose to offend don't care. I'm a pagan and Yule was around long before Christmas but I love this time of year and the kids celebrate Christmas. I have Muslim friends who are far more offended by the fact that 'officials' are trying to ban Christmas on their behalf.
Go out and celebrate the holidays, be proud of your faith and tbh unless you are doing something illegal I dont care what you are celebrating or how.0 -

I work 3rd shift and stopped at a gas station on my way into work in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving, and wished the clerk "Happy Thanksgiving" she said "thank you for saying it 1st, I told a few people that and they yelled at me, so I just stopped." I thought about it, and really people, if its not your holiday just say thank you and move on, or nod your head. Its not worth it to scold others about your beliefs.0

The concern is the balance between positive and negative freedoms. Its reasonable that the state dictates what is not permitted.
Where should the balance sit between "that which is not prohibited is permitted" and "that which is not permitted is prohibited"
The need to codify veers far too close to the latter and is a needless incursion of the state on personal freedom.0 -
I am 50 and grew up in multicultural NYC where saying Merry Christmas was always a crapshoot.

On a Serious note, Christmas isn't about all this hustle and bustle trying to get the latest gifts and spend a ton of money to do it. The government wants you to consume as much as possible in the "Holiday Season" Who designated red and green to be "Christmas Colors" Can't you wear silver and blue and love Jesus just the same and celebrate his presence in the world without the christmas cookies that are all about Santa Claus, bells, and reindeer anyway? In my opinion, I don't need a designated Christmas to celebrate Jesus, I will say Merry Christmas any day of the year if I so feel the need to, but on the flip side if someone tells me Happy Holidays, Happy Winter Solstice, Happy Hannukah, and so on I will be delighted to return the sentiment because the best part of the holiday season is the spirit of love that it seems to put in the hearts of others regardless of their religious or political perspective.0 -
Maybe I just don't get it since here christmas is the done thing and noone gets all up in arms about it, but if you are that against any of the holidays being mentioned, to the point of banning green and ref (wtf?) then why not just not have a party?0

I have a Christian upbringing, but for me it's really about love and friendship. I have a Muslim girlfriend who I send a Christmas card to every year and she sends me one back. She loves Christmas (has come to my place for the day). Then I have by marriage, some Jewish family thrown into the mix and we do a Boxing Day party and call it Christmakkah. They also send cards to their Christian friends.
Same same, it goes both ways and it's all above love and family and friends. I don't really care what religion you are, just be respectful about it.

Agreed. Many people of different faiths celebrate Christmas as well because it is such a commercialized holiday. I had many Jewish friends growing up, and their families put up Christmas trees and exchanged Christmas gifts/cards in addition to celebrating Hannukah.0 -
I didn't read all the answers, well the thread is really long now. However, I think it fair I chime in.
I am Jewish and while I married a Christian and have a Christmas tree in the house that doesn't change the way I was raised. Being Jewish I also know that Hannukah is one of the LEAST important holidays and Christmas is one of the MOST important holidays. Also Christians of all kinds are the largest population in this country, so naturally as the majority we are more likely to be surrounded by the holiday. Most of what is out there is the commercial part of the holiday, so what does that have to do with religion.
I am also Jewish and like the color red, so I can't wear it because it means Christmas. I heard a really good one too, candy canes are a religious symbol because they are red and if you turn it upside down it is a J. OMG, where do people get this stuff.
I am not forcing my religion on someone just because I say Merry Christmas, would you be insulted if I answered Happy Hannukah or wished you Happy Kwanza or a different time of the year said wished you Happy (insert holiday) that wasn't your religion. It means I am trying to share happiness and good cheer, good tidings. Christmas has become more than just a religious holiday. It symbolizes giving and peace on earth, etc. Charities do better this time of year. What we should be teaching in the schools is not how to ignore the differences, but to embrace them and learn from each other. Each religion brings with it so many good things and tolerance of each other should be top of the list. Just because I don't believe the same as you do, doesn't mean I should put you down or belittle your want to wish me a Merry Christmas.
I have a friend who is an atheist, ok he doesn't believe in God.. It doesn't mean he doesn't believe in giving and sharing joy and happiness. People should stop worrying so much about being PC and teach that all people are different and accepting others is what is important and learning about each others traditions is what is most important.
FYI, since hannukah is so unimportant, I find it very silly that people make it so important. It really is a very insignificant holiday, although one with an awesome story and lots of fun, still insignificant.0
