Should I lose the fat first before gaining?

I'm 5' 7" guy at about 165 right now. I'm currently eating at 1650 calories/day which is about 500 less than my TDEE.

My question, is it better to lose the fat first before gaining? My gut tells me its impossible to lose fat while gaining muscle. Has anyone had experience with gaining muscle at a higher fat percentage while still losing the fat?

Thanks in advance.

  • I say go ahead and start lifting now. Even if you continue eating at a deficit, it will help you retain lean body mass.

You could also go for a recomp by eating at maintenance for a while and see what kind of results you get.

Whilst losing fat you want to retain as much muscle mass as possible which is where lifting comes into the equasion.

i would suggest lowering your body fat to the percentage you want it to be at and then start gaining.
