Graet info, but really...why worry about what someone else counts for thei calories? Maybe having they tracked an activity that isn't listed in the database as "walking" when it was something else entirely? And hey...maybe it was some really vigorous sex and not the norm, so they tracked that. Or maybe just don't worry about other people and just worry about yourself.

For some...zero activity is the norm and if tracking those little extras keeps them motivated and gets them to move a little more, then let it and let it go!

    Just my opinion, of course.

    Well said. :drinker:

to the original poster, yours is one of the best. I agree, and I am glad you posted. I think were all in the same boat, looking for help, assisting others and ALL of our ultimate goals are basically the same.........less weight and good health

I read recently in a paper about what medical professionals thought when it came to weight loss. All experts agree

" People who are the most sucessful in a weight loss plan, are those people who adhere to the plan % 100 of the time"

makes sense when you think about it....doesnt it.............

I was in bad physical shape 8 months ago, I had high blood pressure and exercise asthma............I did not have time to screw around and look for excuses. If I was going to stay fat, then my chances for a heart attack or diabetes could take me out..........

its that plain and simple..........FAT KILLS

None of us are immune from bad health......

I want to live longer, I want to be healthy, and if I have to sacrifice for it, fine, it beats the alternative.........

Good luck, were all in this together, so lets continue to help out each other, I cant thank you all enough for all your tips and ideas.......Lloyd
  • Very clear and informative thanks - one question what is Vo2 max and how do I measure it?

    John
  • Not everybody who tracks exercise does it to so they can eat the extra calories,
Absolutely right - but you don't expect to be able to eat all those calories do you - the point is some folks do make that mistake.

If you eat your workout calories you won't lose the weight. it is really just that simple. A 150lb 5'3" women who can run 3 miles is not a marathon runner and should not eat like one, however she should be excited that she can do so and track those cals.
But someone starting out who takes a cardio class needs to be armed with a HR monitor, they need to know if they really are burning the cals they think they are.
I have 3 kids under 5yrs. I haven't sat down in 5yrs. I counted that and now I weight 200lbs. It was life and life is hard but it dosen't burn cals.

This will sound bad any way I say it, but please don't take it in a negative way...it is just my opinion.

It is nice to see that someone with a long line of degrees and certifications, years of working in the health and fitness fields, and has the knowledge and expertise behind him, can pack on 71 extra pounds just like the rest of us.

We are human, and all have the freedom (or curse) of choice. All the education and experience in the world will not help you until you decide to act upon it. I appreciate the information being put forth in a factual manner by the multitude of people on MFP. I thank each and every one of you for the effort and thought that went into your posts. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and should be free to express it. You can pick and choose what ever bits of information you use to base your opinion on. Every person is different and so will be the opinions of each.

We are all on MFP for our own reasons. Yes most of the members are here for health and weight loss reasons. We are all at varying levels of knowledge and self acceptance. We all know what needs to be done. HOW we get there is our own choice (there's that word again). We all have the right to fail in our attempt. We all have the right to succeed. Should we fail, we have the right to try again, and again, and again until we do succeed. It is a personal learning experience.

That being said, in my opinion if someone does something outside of the daily activities of life, if they choose to count it as energy expenditure in what ever form, let them. It is not affecting you personally in any way shape or form. If they go on to post "I am not losing...what am I doing wrong?" at some point, then you can again offer your opinion and knowledge in a respectful manner. They have the right to accept your information and act on it, or not. It is human to err. It is human to learn. Add a bit of new information to our personal data base and carry on with life.

I have enough on my "life plate" to worry about. What someone else is doing or not doing right or wrong is none of my concern unless asked for my input. I offer my information and go back to my own life. Take it or leave it....their choice.

great replies on a controversial subject.....again, thanks to everyone for their input.

One thing I have absorbed in life is my experiences , how to deal with them, and how others deal with them . For me, it was getting to be a matter of life and death. Had I not made my change, sooner or later, I would have to pay for my poor choices. I was going to die of either a heart attack of hypertension.........Period, thats it in a nut shell according to my doctor

Here is a site, an incredibel blog of a 28 year old man who struggled with weight, just like the rest of us. Sadly, his fight against obesity ended on August 29, 2010 , as he died of heart failure.

I read his blog religiously, read his problems of being 600 lbs,, read his struggles and I learned from him......

He was only 28, and sadly hes gone. ...... I hope this helps us in our journey, it really helped me....

Tracking sex, walking to the shops and any of those sort of activities is ridiculous in my opinion, half the time it is just an excuse to eat more.

    Bravo!

But what if I have sex while flying from a trapeeze?

All kidding aside, I do agree with the original post and counting day to day activities isn't an option for me. With that said, I do "count" my goal to walk 10,000 steps a day (about 5 miles) during my daily activities. It is my way of cutting down on my carbon footprint...

Of course, I do a variety of "gym-time" cardio, running, and strength training that I burn 800-1500 calories per day. This is for weight loss and to pay for the sins of my past (too much fun and not enough work).

I'm very proud of all the hard work you put into getting healthy Lloyd, I'm also very proud of myself, though we didn't start out with the same illnesses we did both start out very overweight which is high risk EVERYTHING. I'm pleased we both found this site and have been successful. :drinker:

I so very much agree with this statement for myself ~~~~> " People who are the most sucessful in a weight loss plan, are those people who adhere to the plan % 100 of the time" Though not everyone will agree with it, it works best this way for me. I don't feel deprived, or cheated or that I'm missing out. I eat good food, fruits taste like treats to me now. Processed foods don't interest me anymore, not after walking away from them so long ago. Everyone has a different plan, this is mine. I prefer high energy over feeling sluggish and shame.

I'm glad you shared that statement it really hit home with me this afternoon. Ok Ok, so I highjacked the thread a wee bit...:flowerforyou:

Not everybody who tracks exercise does it to so they can eat the extra calories,
I excercise because it's good for my body, mind and spirit not so I can eat more. That's my method though. I know excercise strengthens my entire being, so each day I get out there and DO IT! Not thinking of how much food I get for doing it.

I've never understood that concept some adhere too. Perhaps it's good I don't, I like right where I am being good to my body because it takes me where I need to go in life!

ohhhh is this WHERE the sign 'will work for food' comes from?:noway: :smokin:
