how accurate are these things?
you have to hold a handle for a few seconds and it tells you your body fat
apparently my body fat is 30% which is quite bad but i struggle to believe this somehow.. as i'm 5 ft 6 and 140lbs.. hmm

I vaguely remember a previous post where someone said they were NOT accurate at all. Any machines that are out there where kids can abuse them, may not stay very well calibrated. I used to check my blood pressure on a store machine & it always said I was high, but when I'd see my doc, she'd say it was very healthy. I mentioned the store machine & the nurse said, "Yeah, we get a lot of appointments made because of those machines, but then people are ok." If you purchased a scale that does body fat percentage, it'd probably be more accurate (Weight Watchers, & Biggest Loser scales are good brands).

But wherever you measure, if you want it to be as accurate as possible, then follow these guidelines, mostly related to hydration.
    1. Weigh at the end of the day.
    2. No food or drinks, not even water, 4 hours before weighing.
    3. But up to that 4 hr cut off, hydrate like crazy, drinks lots of water.
    4. No exercise 12 hrs before weighing.
    5. Weigh before any showers, as feet & body should be completely dry.

It does sound like 30% is way higher than what you actually might be. BMI is a rough estimate of body fat percentage & that would put you at 22.5.

Inaccurate. It's entirely dependent on how hydrated you are at the time of measurement and other factors. My little scale can vary anywhere from 28% BF to 23% BF depending on the time of day. I'm 5'6" and 66 kg, and I find it really hard to believe I would fluctuate fat that much in a day. In fact I think adding and subtracting 5% body fat in a day is next to impossible without liposuction.
