running in the snow

How do you do it? I assume it's going to be a wet and cold one.

  • ugh running in the winter is a challenge. Look up screw shoes. They are for running when it's icy. You can buy them or fashion them yourself. I hate running on the tredmill because it's soooooo boring but sometimes the weather is just too much for me to overcome.

Same way I run in the cold sun: one foot in front of the other.

normal shoes, normal socks, tights, long sleeve tech shirt, running jacket, gloves, hat.
I usually have to loose the gloves after 3 or 4 miles.

First, you've got to do smaller steps. Don't try to beat any records on snow!

if it's icy, go for crampons. I run whith my summer shoes, a good pair of wool socks and crampons when needed.

The most dangerous placex are the corner of the streets. If you don't see the ground, assume it's icy underneath.

I've heard that you must dress as if it was 10 degrees hotter. You are supposed to be chilly when you start your run. don't worry, you'll get warm! The key is to sweat as less as possible because if you sweat too much, that's when you get cold. (That's why having clothes that will evacuate sweat is important in the winter) Always protect the ears and the fingers. Unlike scorpio516, I keep my gloves because it's too cold in Quebec!

    Have a nice run!

Slow down. Invest in running cleats. Slow down.

Just go for the fresh stuff better grip. I wear my trail shoes as well. I also for long runs put plastic bags over my socks as that keeps the toes dryer longer. Normally gloves come off after a couple of miles.

I usually just shorten the stride a bit and everything is fine. The key is keeping your weight directly under you... when you don't is when it gets slippy.

Layers, layers, and another layer!! Oh and don't forget the YakTrax Run cleats! They work awesome on snow and ice but a little bit of a pain on asphalt or concrete.

When it's snowing I run in my water proof 3/4 high hiking shoes that way I can run in the grass or step in puddles and keep my feet dry. I have New Balance Gore Tex and I highly recommend them for running.
