Running shoes differences?

Do you need a different shoe for indoor versus outdoor? different weather? trail versus sidewalk? the gym versus the weight room?

I'm planning on getting a decent running shoe after Christmas and have no idea where to even start. I am going to the boulder running company where they apparently measure you and have you run on a treadmill so they can see how you run??

I think I need good gym shoes too? Mine slip on the gym floor and I do a lot in the gym as well as in the weight room. Is there a difference?

Adidas had some interesting new ones they were promoting at this event I went to..

Since I am looking at signing up for at least 5 more runs as well as the weekly one the running club I joined does plus I want to join this hare running club thing that sounded like lots of fun! (plus they end the thing at a bar.. can't go wrong there!!),

I think I need some proper shoes.. lol

    Yes....

    I have
3 pairs of road running shoes ... really wish we had trails around here. But then I'd probably want a different pair for trails.
3 pair for treadmill / indoor work / circuits

    Shoes can really make/break a workout...espeically running!!

Go to a running store and tell them what you need -- what you are going to wear them for. They will evaluate your gait and fit you for the right shoe or shoes.

I get plantar fasciitis if I don't wear shoes for over pronation. It's good that you're going to a running store so they can tell you what type of runner you are. Other than having shoes that are designed for your stride, it doesn't really matter what you have. I use the same ones for all my workouts to avoid getting PF again.

If you are talking about Boulder Running Company, you probably live in Boulder. I would suggest Fleet Feet instead. They also do the treadmill testing. Boulder Running Company has a lot of elite runners working for them and they can be dismissive toward people starting out. Fleet Feet is owned by a former elite runner, but I find her to be much nicer and empathetic.

Well I live in Colorado Springs, not boulder.. They told me they do the treadmill thing.. idk.. I'm going there in January. I've got to get through the holidays. I like the smaller owned business better, i just wouldn't even know where to start with this. If I think it's worth the drive i'll check out fleet feet. but it's an hour give or take from me.. so idk..

OK.. so having different shoes for different things is ideal, but not a huge thing? The balls of my feet hurt sometimes during combat class esp if I had a week where I ran more then usual.

I don't get PF, but I have been getting shin splints.. hoping this helps with them too.. I've also started stretching more diligently pre and post workout.

I only use my running shoes for running. I have different shoes for cardio videos and strength work outs. It's not cheap, but I don't want to use my running shoes for anything other than running. They break down so quickly as it is! It's amazing how quickly you can slap the miles on a pair of shoes!!

Tell all of those things to the person at the running stoe.

For what it's worth, we have two small, locally-owned ones here. One is owned by a podiatrist, the other by two former Olympians. The one the Olympians own has the treadmill/computer/fancy stuff. The other one doesn't. I've gone to both. I will not go back to the Olympians. They did a horrible job fitting me. The podiatrist-owned store, without the fancy equipment, was awesome.
