Tanita Scale Inconsistency

We have a Tanita scale that measures body fat % as well as weight (to the half pound). It is an older model. We've probably had it about 14 years (I know we got it before we were married and that was 13.5 years ago).

When I get on the scale I find my body fat percentage can vary anywhere from 17% up to 23% from one day to the next (although it's usually in the 19-21% range). I know there is some variation based on hydration, but six percentage points is a pretty big swing. My weight is fairly stable, usually ranging between 105-110 pounds (although if I step on and off and on again, it can vary by a half pound or so within seconds).

I am wondering whether it is just time to buy a new scale.

Try not to use it right after you shower/bathe or work out (sweaty). Since they measure electrical impedance wet skin can change the reading. Hope this helps!

Bodyfat measuring scales are generally accurate +/-5% from my experience. I got mine for about £20 on Amazon and I get different weight, BMI, water and bodyfat readings everyday. According to my check ins I weighed 144.4lbs on 18 November and 150.2lbs a few days ago. Bunch of bull in terms of consistency but weight will fluctuate. And oso above is right, the scales tend to use a bit of electricity and the time it takes for it to pass through your body (or something clevererer than that) so it won't be accurate every time, even though the product description says so.

It's like if you came to my cafe and ordered a latte, it'll be a littler bit different depending on how cold the pitcher is, the milk is, how busywe are, what distractions are in place and so on. The milk won't be foamed perfectly equally each time, but remember it's the little differences in the milk and espresso that help make the beauty of latte art.

I have a newer pair. From what I've gathered and do, you should weight before dinner after non eating for 3 or 4 hours. Mornings are very inaccurate because of lack of water etc. So eat breakfast (if you do), normal lunch, then after about 3 or 4 hours of not eating weigh. Do it exactly the same conditions each weigh in if possible.

Mine are pretty accurate that way relative to previous weigh ins. Also note the hydration level, if its lower than normal it will tell you your body fat is higher than it probably is. When I was 35 pounds heavier, no matter how much I drank, I could not get the hydration level above 49%. No that I'm thinner, it goes to 55 percent. So make sure you properly hydrate in the morning, weight on empty stomach before dinner or before bed if you haven't eaten in 3 or 4 hours. I think you will find it much more consistent that way.
