Cardio (running) is my thing. But i think i need to start adding some muscle. Ive pretty much reached the point where no matter how fast I run, I barely get my hr up or break a sweat. I started adding a weight vest and two 5lb hand weights which do help but im looking for other ideas to raise my hr up while running and work upper body muscles in the process. Has anyone else with a treadmill worked any other exercise into there walk/jog/run?

Hi,
I think you might want to consider interval training to get your heart rate (HR?) up.
For upper body strength, why not try Farmers Walks? You can't run with them (more a brisk stroll) but it'll work your upper back, deltoids and core.0 -
+1 for interval training. Try hill training as well. Find a hill that takes 1-2 minutes to sprint up, jog back down and repeat 5-10 times, soon gets the HR up.0

As noted above, HIIT and hills should get your HR up. You could also build a program where you mix in some body weight exercises in. For example:
- Run a quarter of a mile at your 5K pace, stop and do as many push ups as you can,
- Run a quarter of a mile, followed by pull ups,
- Run a quarter of a mile, followed by mountain climbers
- Run a quarter of a mile, followed by burpees
If that doesn't get your heart rate up, you're probably a cyborg.0
