I got my $5 worth. When I win ( ) I'll be taking the payments. I want to be stupid in yearly doses and not all at once.

I bought a ticket. But they said the odds of winning have gone up because they are drawing from a larger pool of numbers. I really have no expectation of winning, but at least I have one chance at it.

so if you all win are you taking the lump sum or the payments?

Lump sum! You can't transfer your yearly payments to someone else if you die!

Forgive the downer, but lotteries are a tax on people who don't understand probability.

This is why I buy only one ticket.

I am going to play, I am ok with losing a few dollars on a chance to be a half a billionaire (before taxes).
After I win , I can officially claim myself as a Sugar Momma!

IN! My family yesterday put in money (there's 30 of us) and my uncles bought tickets and just emailed us a copy of all of them. I'll probably drop another $20 today on my own. Can't win if you don't play! Is it a crapshoot? Yep, but so is electing a president.

I'll drop $10 on some occasions when the lump sum is greater than the odds (e.g. >$250+ million). I have done that yet for this jackpot but will play tonight.
I'm not an avid lottery player, but years ago I created a simple Google Docs spreadsheet. Plug in the jackpot $ and # of winners and it'll spit out how much after-tax income I can safely generate through extremely conservative investments while maintaining principal. My plan would be spend 5-10% as desired (house, car, travel, etc.) and LIVE off of the interest, thus preserving principal essentially forever for myself and heirs.

*ETA: I wish VA law allowed winners to remains anonymous. Maybe I can at least wear a clever disguise for the photo ops!
