I am a trucker as many know, been fighting my weight and losing the battle for a long time now. While I slide and fall more than I stride and run, but I still have the deep desire to become healthy and under 300lbs, and yes I'm almost 500lbs now. So I am now attempting something and need no remarks of my past failures, but any and all posts that you honestly think may help me , please!!
I wish to try to use Shakes and Meal bars, and snack bars to help replace some of my meals that can fit into my 40qt cooler.
At almost 500lbs, I was wondering ideas on suggestions of product, and why, and how best to purchase them, like a case or so at a time, like 1-2 weeks supply at one time.
I plan to replace 2-3 meals a day, and also have products to snack on to help with both hunger and also give me energy to make it thru the day. I will likely have a 1 small sensible meal a day , but may skip a day now and then. Suggestions and idea's from your own personal experience's would be appreciated.
Wal-Mart, Sams club or ordering online or maybe a nutrition store as the place to buy these.
Thank You
Patrick

There are a bunch out there.
The Lean Shakes (I believe that's what they're called) from GNC are pretty great tasting. I like the Swiss Chocolate flavored one.
Taste is so personal though. You should try a few and see what you like.0 -
I eat a kashi bar each day for breakfast, but otherwise I really have no advice for you. Perhaps seek the advice of a nutritionist?
What I really want to say is that I wish you the very best in getting healthy!
Daily logging on MFP is really a terrific way to get to where you want to go. :flowerforyou:0 -
I use a protein shake from Walmart that's less than $15 for 2lbs. Its by Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein and they have several different flavors but I prefer the Vanilla.0

I do not suggest skipping your real food meal, not even for a day!
I suggest buying a few samples from your supermarket or chemist as different brands have different tastes and once you have a week's supply that would be a week of torture!!
Second suggestion, get your Dr on side, maybe with a referral to a nutritionist or similar.
Third, doesn't matter what you eat, you need to start moving, no use being slim if you have no muscle to make it look good, also muscle will help with the fat burn.
Fourth, you need to log onto Scooby.com and find out your TDEE, work out how much you should be eating, take 15-20% off and eat that, recalculate regularly because with your weight you should drop fairly fast. Shakes have calories, bars have calories too.
Finally, give up the soda and drink lots of water!
Best of luck0 -
I like the EAS AdvantEdge protein drinks, as they are very low carb and they taste good. They come in Vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry. Sam's club has the choc and vanilla by the case for very good price. I also like some of the Atkins bars, namely the ones with whole nuts in them. Beef Jerky is a good snack for on the go. High protein and it takes a while to eat it. Carrots, cucumbers, celery, are all good veggies to munch on. Boiled eggs are good to keep on hand as well.0

They are low in sugar too! Love their products!0 -
I've tried a billion and the best, in my opinion is Plantfusion... But I'm also really into having a natural source of protien, preferably not the same form of protien I get from all the meat and soy I eat.0

The problem is that most of those won't fill you up at all. The only bars that fill me up really are Quest bars, because they have 20g of protein and 17g of fiber. Shakes you'll probably have to add milk and other things to make filling.
How about keeping fruit, beef jerky etc in your truck?0 -
I see these sorts of things as an easy way of getting calories; not a replacement for a meal.
I would be looking at salads with lean meat added myself - you can eat a whole load of lettuce and still not be up to the calories of the first bite of a bar.0 -
I know trucking can be hard, and it is hard to get a good meal in. But I agree with others who say not to replace meals with the shakes and bars. I suggest maybe using those for snacks and stuff, but try to get real meals in. Being a trucker you know all the gadgets that are out there now. I remember stopping by the I 75 Chrome Shop in Florida and being amazed at the gadgets that truckers have now. You can invest in one of the mini fridges for your rig and maybe a crock pot that plugs into a cigarette lighter, as well as one of these:
Also, there is a facebook page called Semi-Truckmade recipes for people like you. I suggest checking them out.

Have safe trips!
ETA: I saw this thing at Kroger the other day:
Not sure if it is battery powered or not, but it is 20 oz and it warms food up for you, so you can use it to warm up soups and things while you are on the road...to help cut down on the parishables.0 -
When I don't have "time" to make breakfast, I eat greek yogurt with 2 Tbsp of crunchy peanut butter mixed in and some fruit. I also like kind bars (specifically the dark chocolate and sea salt) and quest bars (chocolate peanut butter and peanut butter supreme are my favorites). I wouldn't replace lunch or dinner with a bar or shake, though, as I think a variety of real foods will help you feel satisfied and stay on track. Best of luck - this is a great community with lots of support and knowledge. Feel free to add me if you want another friend!0

I started this journey at 348 pounds. I have lost 67 pounds since February 2013. My shakes of choice are the Total Lean pre-made shakes at GNC - I get the vanilla and chocolate flavors (strawberry was not to good). I buy them when they are buy 2 get one free. And the Quest bars are good - very good nutrition wise and they are filling. I also like Luna bars - they are very tasty (better than Quest - but not as nutrient friendly as Quest). I drink nothing with carbs (no sodas, etc...) only water, unsweetened iced tea or diet turkey hill mango green tea. Good Luck!!! You can do this!!! If I can - anyone can!!0

You should check out Dr. Andersons "Simple Diet", it uses shakes, bars, and frozen meals (may have stuff you can get at a truck stop). They are all bought at the normal store, not stuff ordered online, so it is cheaper. He has guidelines for picking them out. I think it is a good option if you want to take weight off faster and completely automate it so to speak. I think it would fit your life well, it is working for me.0

While I am not a trucker I do spend many hours a day on the go and away from the house. My solution has been to cook enough chicken or other lean meat and plan my meals for a few days and pack. I normaly have to pack around 4 to 5 meals at one time to cover me for the day. I do take a few protein bars with me for snacks during the day or sometimes a protein shake. I use life choice bars from walmart. I use these as snacks to help me reach my proein goals for the day. I know stopping at truck stops and fast food joints are easy and quick but after you log those a few times it will give you a new look at how bad they are. That being said I still stop once or twice a week for a quick bite if I didn't make it back home to pack for the next day. Good luck.0

I love Quest Bars. Message them on Facebook and they will send you a couple free bars. They also have pasta. I like the GNC Total Lean 25 Protein Powders with Orange Cream, Apple Cinnamon and Mixed Berries being my favorite of the flavors. I only mix them with water and ice. I recently ordered Optimum Nutrition from GNC in the Chocolate Coconut Candy flavor and it is smooth, tastes great and you can really taste the coconut. The GNC brand has 200 calories and 25 grams of protein and I think the Optimum Nutrition is 150 calories and 24 grams of protein. (I'm sorry I don't have the bottle in front of me.) Also if you are on a time constraint, you can buy eggs that are already boiled, pouches of tuna, fresh veggies and fruits. Good luck to you on your journey! You got this!!0
