How exactly does the app work (iPhone)?

So I have the app, and I was wondering. Should you put all the exercise you do throughout the day? Like I'm in HS so I do tons of walking from class to class, should I put those calculations in or not?
If I didn't put any exercise what so ever. Would the calculations provided by my fitness pal app be the base calories my body uses? Like the calories my body needs just to operate by sleeping and laying in bed. Isn't there a special word for what I'm trying to describe? Lol

MFP takes account of your "laying in bed" calorie expenditure and your normal daily activity which you may have set to sedentary or a higher level. To that you should add any "extra" exercise you do occasionally ie not every day. Every day stuff should be in your activity level.
If you ran an hour every other day for example you would log that.
Walking about a bit during the day would qualify as more than sedentary, but even 10,000 steps a day horizontally doesn't use a huge amount of calories.0
