Taste of Coconut Milk

I'm not a big fan of coconut flakes in foods. Part of my dislike is the taste and part is the texture. With that said, I'm wondering how much coconut taste is in canned coconut milk you use for cooking especially when it's used with curry based sauces.

  • Coconut milk in can does not taste good. It's rather bland and I suspect has hidden preservatives. I could barely taste it even at large quantities. If you want the sweet full taste of coconut milk, you'll have to extract it yourself. Get a real MATURE(not young) coconut, grate the white then "sqeeze out" the milk with water. There are youtube videos showing how to make your own coconut milk

The brand I buy (365 Organic from Whole Foods) has three ingredients: coconut milk, water and guar gum.You can't "hide" preservatives, by law they have to be listed on the ingredient list.

To the OP: if you don't like the taste of coconut, then why on earth do you want to use coconut milk? It will make your curry taste like....coconut.

Thanks for your input. I will argue that not everything tastes like what it originally does once added and cooked with other things. Cake doesn't taste like scrambled eggs even tho eggs are an ingredient. I've tried unsweetened almond milk and it doesn't taste much like almonds and once added to a smoothie with other things, you can't taste it at all. When I make chicken and dumplings, I puree cooked mixed veggies in the broth and don't taste them over the spices, meat and dumplings. This is why I was wondering about the taste of coconut milk when used in cooking dishes with a lot of spices.

My husband doesn't like coconut but when I add coconut milk to curry he doesn't notice it. It is not that powerful of a coconut flavour and adds a bit of extra depth and richness to some curries.

Thanks for the info. This is what I was wondering since when I googled my questions, I saw answers along the lines of mild and sweetness but didn't address the actual coconut flavor.

I'll browse some recipes this week and figure out if there's one I want to try over the weekend.
