It should be illegal to call Jennifer Lawrence fat, the rest of you can fight your own battles.

Oh god, poor J.Law. This is so typical of her extreme/sarcastic way of talking. She clearly didn't mean it literally. Her, "Well, we're regulating everything else?" seemed very much a, "UH, why not? Lol."

Come to me, Jennifer. I will protect you. Rest your head upon my bosoms.

    Oh, Ok!! That makes sense.

Seems pretty far fetched. Knowing my girl J-Law (we are BFFs) this is was probably some sort of sarcastic comment taken out of context.

+1000 cool points to the OP for demolition man reference though.

    J. Law is actually *my* BFF... and also my girlfriend.

I'm sorry to break it to you on a public forum...

Also OP, while not a reference to Demolition man, if you would have played off of her last name, the policing or morality, and the Stalone reference "I AM THE LAW!"

We may have been best friends.

ahh damn.. that was a good one I missed.. that's ok, this thread was "Expendable" :glasses: :drinker:  (bad I know)

Is there any difference between calling somebody fat and describing them as overweight? Isn't the latter delivering the same message without resorting to the aggressive overtones of the former?

While I agree that it is rude and nasty to call someone fat, a law against it would infringe upon the right to freedom of speech in general. Unfortunately, we can't have it both ways and only apply this concept to pleasant comments that everyone wants to hear.

Any possibility tha she was just making a point and doesn't actually believe a law shouldbe enacted making it actually illegal to call someone fat on TV?

It's stupid that people can't express themselves openly. I would rather have someone say nasty things about fat people that way I can avoid having anything to do with them. Same thing goes with racist and sexist remarks. We just have a society full of undercover bigots, racists and idiots. How is that helpful?

People should say kind things because they are kind hearted, not because they are under threat to do so.

There have been plenty of people in my life that I wasted time on until they felt comfortable enough to let their true ugly colors show and then I was able to weed them out of my life.

It'd be really nice if people could just not be *kitten* to each other without requiring a law against it.

As to anyone calling for any sort of law, remember that laws serve one purpose - to restrict your freedoms. There are some freedoms we want restricted, of course. Freedom to murder, steal, con people, etc.... But once you've hit the major points, you should think long and hard about everything that comes afterwards.

    i agree

I think government already attempts to legislate morality enough. We don't need them to police this too.

As a taxpayer, I don't want to fund the ridiculous amount of law enforcement it would require to cleanse the word "fat" out of a meanie's mouth.

    ^^^^this

Oh and if you or anyone else is offended by the word "fat" then i challenge you to open up your copy of the constitution and let me know where it says that you have the right to not be offended. I don't personally talk to or about people like that but I certainly don't wnat the government in yet another part of my life.

Freedom of speech, suck it up buttercup.
ETA: And I don't particularly care what some celebrity thinks either. Many of them are not known for their intelligent statements. Is it crappy and hurtful, yeah? Should there be any law about it? Hell to the no.

It won't be a popular view, but kids have a lot harder time because they are coddled too often. I am not saying ridiculing people is ok but making a law so people can't be mean just seems silly. Part of being an adult is learning how to take crap and not letting it affect your life. If a person hears nothing negative ever, they will be overwhelmed when they finally do. I also believe in keeping score in kids sports....sorry great try but its better to learn how to lose with a game and try better next time. I think over compensating for feeling is making kids over sensitive and poor losers now a days.

yep. the real world does not come equipped with padded walls.

It should be illegal to call someone skinny

It should be illegal to describe people

    Everyone is the same

...and once we all become the same, we will be easier to control.... herd mentality

    assimilate. resistance is futile.

  • You know I like her, and she looks great. But, really, its a kind of lazy, poorly thought out, self centered rights limiting comment. I mean she has one job other than acting: keeping in great shape to fit into roles, for millions and millions of dollars. She doesn't like to be told her body doesn't fit an image for a role, in a primarily image profession, so not only should everyone change this for her, but make it illegal to comment on it. Wow...hmmm... If you have freedom of speech, you have the risk of being offended. Live with it and get a thicker skin? But instead she wants to change rules to make her very easy life so much easier. Next we will have a law to do what GuitarJerry says: She's hot, we do what she says.
