Feel sick after taking vitamins... why??

I find when I take my "weight smart" vitamins I tend to feel super nauseas for like a minute after words to the point of having to brace myself from gagging.
I know it's not a swallowing pills issues because I've been swallowing my whole life no problem (yeah yeah yeah, I stand by what I said!) so I'm not sure why this is happening.
I'm going to also go ahead and assume that this isn't normal??
Suggestions??
Thanks!!

You aren't alone. I have an open diary and I take A LOT of vitamins (please, nobody judge me). When I take them I HAVE to take them when I eat. I just figure 1) any pills on an empty stomach isn't good, and 2) I want to trick my body into thinking I received the vitamins through my food (again, please don't judge me). So, if you are taking them on an empty stomach you might want to eat first. Another trick that gets me to wash the big horse pills down--I plug my nose so I can't taste them, and I literally drink about 16oz of water to flush them down and so I have no aftertaste. Those are the tricks that have worked for me.0

Do you take them with food? I always feel nauseaus when I take vitamins on an empty stomach. Also, if you hold it too long in you mouth (that's what she said), some of the nasty vitamin taste comes of, so taking it with a flavored beverage and swallowing quick can help too. If that doesn't work, try a different vitamin. I personally have found that certain brands don't sit well with me, it takes a little trial and error.0

I usually take them with a bit of food but I guess because it's the morning, there's not THAT much in there.
I will try taking them when I have my largest meal and maybe that will help??
It's weird, I've never had trouble with pills before!!0 -
Certain vitimins make me nauseous if I take them on an empty stomache. Particularly my iron tablets (they've come back up before). Just take them with food and you should be okay0

I almost puked on a traffic court judge once because I took my vitamin and didn't eat. Which could have resulted in punishment to the fullest extent of the law. TAKE THEM WITH FOOD.0

I can tell you this. If you dont eat anything with the pills with in 5mins, your going to throw up or feel like it. And eating 3 bites of something isnt going to help. MUST eat a full meal at least before taking vitamins. Been there!0

Thanks everyone!! This has been super helpful0

I have to take mine with food also, some times I will take half of my vitamins with 2 different meals.0

I've always had the exact same issue with vitamins... until I was pregnant last year and searched the internet for weeks looking for a prenatal that wouldn't make my already nauseous tummy 1000 times worse and I found a prenatal by a company called New Chapter. AWESOME organic vitamin. They make a woman's daily... which I take now, and I can take it on an empty stomach with no upset AT ALL (even says on the bottle that you can take on an empty stomach). They are a little pricy compared to your typical drugstore vitamin, but well worth it in my opinion. I like knowing that I'm taking a high quality vitamin and I'm not just literally dropping my money down the toilet. Here's a link to the one I use now... good stuff Good luck.

Wow that's great!! When possible I do certainly prefer organic also. Once I finish this bottle (if my stomach can handle it with some food) I'm totally going to try those!I've always had the exact same issue with vitamins... until I was pregnant last year and searched the internet for weeks looking for a prenatal that wouldn't make my already nauseous tummy 1000 times worse and I found a prenatal by a company called New Chapter. I started taking mine at night before bed. That way I am sleep before I get to feeling nauseous.0

They are hard on your stomach. The most recent opinion of the American Medical Association says that vitamins are not necessary, except for vitamin D in some instances. I'd save my money if I were you.0

It happens to me depending on the supplement.
Some vitamins contain concentrated amounts of essential minerals but in that dosage the system treats them as a toxin and wants them out. I take my supplements during meals and spread them across the day. Fattier foods tend to make them easier on the stomach.
I do believe in taking supplements as long as there is a purpose for them. If you have a balanced diet, get enough rest/sleep, you'll need minimal supplements.
Also be very wary of taking excessive amounts of fat soluble vitamins they aren't easily removed from the system if you take too much.0 -
CALCIUM does this to me. Oh god, it's made me throw up before. I used to take a pack of vitamins and there was a big old calium pill in there that made me hurl once I got to school. Just try to take it with more food and water is all I can suggest?!0

I got so sick when I first started taking vitamins that i thought I was pregnant because every morning I felt like I was going to throw up and had to lie down. It was the vitamins. For me, having coffee and vitamins in my stomach at the same time is a ticket to misery. I usually try to take them either with dinner or right before bed. Right before bed, actually, seems to work best for me unless I had a very early dinner.0

why are you taking them?0

woah your kitty is cute0 -
I've spoken with a lot of pregnant women (who often begin taking a multivitamin if they hadn't been before getting pg) and some can't stomach it but find them easier to take at night before bed. Not sure if that would help your problem, but often the iron supplement I believe can cause upset stomach.0

It's the iron. Try multivitamins without iron.0

Unfortunately the iron is *one of* the reasons I'm taking them.
I'm not a huge meat eater and I'm finding especially with cutting my calories it's a challenge for me to get all my vitamins and minerals. MFP has decided that 1200 is my goal for calories so I'm on a pretty strict budget on the days I don't get to the gym lol
I don't take them every day - just sort of a few times a week as a "top up" so to speak for anything I've missed a long the way. It's the iron. Try multivitamins without iron.0 -
Try another brand really. And make sure to have it after a meal, I tried on an empty stomach once and I just ended up puking. I remember taking prenatal vitamins and they just made me sick every single time...0

why dont you try slo-Fe if you are taking them for anemia. released a little slower. take them at night and as others have said with food
otherwise you dont even really need to take a multivitamin unless youre trying to get pregnant0
