Christmas is a time of giving. Truthfully we should give all year, but the holidays really brings it out.
What do you give to others? What do you do that makes other smile and brightens their day?
I have been on both sides of the coin here.. been the recipient of toy drives and have seen my son's smile when he realized there were presents under the tree after all and have seen the pure joy on others faces when they receive something unexpected, unasked for, and without expectations. I'll tell you the latter is a much more satisfying feeling.
Do you give to other charities? Food banks? Volunteer somewhere? Why did you choose that organization?
If I can pass this thought process onto my child, I will be one proud momma.
To answer my own question: I pick a struggling friend and sent them something from Santa every year. This year i'm sending a gift card to a friend so she can get her kids what they want. I collect food for the food pantry in my district, I go Christmas caroling at the local assisted living here, i go to as many toy drives and fund Christmas fund raisers as I can. I donate to safe ride organization (they come pick your drunk butt up and drive you home free of charge and no questions asked.) I send Christmas cards to *everyone* I know and can find and address for. You never know that might be the only card they receive. I choose my 5ks based on who they benefit. I used to work in a food kitchen once a month with my son, but the one here doesn't allow minors, so I have to keep searching. I will send my family and friends random things throughout the year if they are struggling and need something.
I do this because I think other people are important and that everyone should be able to find happiness. I just imagine that when they get my card or my surprise gift a smile crosses their face.. even if it is only for a fleeting second. I want them to know someone cares.
