I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with just walking and loosing weight. My doctor told me to just walk. I was thinking of starting out with 2 miles a day and going with that.

thank you

That is all I did until just a week or so ago. No gym membership...no equipment...all I had was my legs :) Probably about 18 of my 20lbs was walking and better eating habits.

My mom did. She only walks either in the neighborhood or on the treadmill. I think she's up to about six miles a day and has lost around 60 lbs.
  • Walking is a great place to start. Good luck!!!!

Up until May that is all that I did. In May I purchased a bike and I bike every other day, but I still continue to walk every single day. I take my dogs to the dog park and I walk around the enclosure the entire time they are playing. I usually walk at least an hour but usually 75 minutes. I am just not a big believer in spending money on things you don't need to, so hence, no gym membership. I have legs, I take my dogs to the park every single day, no matter what, so why not make the best of my time there. My first 40ish pounds lost were just the walking. I am actually already beginning to stress what to do in the winter when it is below zero and snow up to my knees! (North Dakota) I do have a treadmill and will have to hit that up but walking in the same place is not the same for me, but gotta do what I gotta do.

My aunt who is almost 70 lost 80 lbs by sticking to around 1200 calories per day and walking EVERY day. Took her a little over a year . . . I figure if a 68 year old lady can do it then I certainly can!

When I first started to diet all I did was walk and eat according to the slimfast 321 plan and then i quit doing that (one weekend of fun screwed me up!) and I started counting calories, eating non-processed foods and walking and somewhere in between all of that I've lost 3lbs. I do the denise austin 3 week bootcamp (20 min. long, $10 at walmart) occasionally :)

Thank you everyone that is just what I need. I will start with two miles and then go from there. Tracie I am also afraid of winter I live in Minnesota and we actually sold our treadmill when I fell off the wagon the first time. We do have a gym membership that I was going to give up but I will just use the treadmill there after insurance we only pay like $5 a person but I'm starting to dread the gym. grrrr. Walking is so nice to do.

Hey, That is how I started and gradually built myself up. Yes, you can lose weight by walking. God Bless, Brenda
