Do the type of calories matter?

We learned at my YMCA diabetes avoidance class that fat calories require more effort to expunge...
WTF does that even mean? How do you determine how much protein is right for you?
1. Look at your strength activity level. Do you strength train regularly? Is it a progression program or high intensity program? Do you do a lot of sustained cardio (ie - marathon/triathlon training, etc)?
2. Calculate your lean body mass. You can do this by calculating your body fat percentage, converting it into number of pounds, then subtracting that from your total weight. What's left is your lean body mass.
3. Multiply your lean body mass weight number by .5. This number is the minimum, and your lean body mass number as grams is your upper end (ie - if you have 120lb of lean body mass, then your protein needs are 60-120g). The more of #1 you do, the more protein you should have. Even if you're not doing the above, but you're looking to lose weight, you should probably strive for a ways above the .5 number (probably around .75), to keep from losing too much lean mass.0 -

Eating sufficient protein is the most important factor in retaining lean body mass while dieting. Obviously, resistance training as well...
