At my gym we have a half cage squat rack and this week was the first time I saw this guy using it.

He got the bar on his shoulders then walked backwards out of it. I thought the whole idea of it was for safety/not having a spotter etc and the bars/clips were there to caught the barbell if needed?

It also makes it easier to load the bar onto your shoulders. Maybe the guy was doing some lighter sets to practice his form or warm up, so the risk was lower.

    Why do you ask?

half cage squat rack? is that like a two legged biped?

the rack is there to use as you please. some people step out because the rails are too high for their squat depth. some people step out because they feel claustrophobic. some step out because they aren't worried about the particular weight they are using plus they know how to bail. i step out because the bar is too low for me to get full range of motion on my bicep curls
