Running Shoes

I can't remember if I read it on MFP or somewhere else on the internet, but I read running shoes are only good for 300 miles. Is this atrue estimate? I am, by no means, a "runner". I like to walk/run about 4-4 5 miles 5x a week. I just feel a pair of shoes that only last 300 miles kinda sucks. Are there better shoes out there? Right now I have Nike Flex something. Any thoughts or advice?

    It will depend on the brand and shoe type. I wear minimalist style running shoes by Brooks and they are rated for roughly 350 miles but I had another per of Brooks with my support that were roughly 600 milers... If you go to a running shoe store (I refer to buy my shoes there because they are more knowledgeable) they can tell you the recommended shelf life of each shoe.... Best of Luck

    My guess would be if you're walking half the time, your shoes are taking less of a beating and will last longer. Either way, your shoes won't magically expire at a certain mileage, that's just a rule of thumb for an average time after which the cushioning is exhausted and/or you might see splits in the uppers. I've had several pair of Brooks that lasted *well* beyond their mileage rating as well.

    It can depend on a lot of things, your weight, your stride, the intensity of your runs. I also have minimalist Brooks that are good for 350 miles. My stability shoes lasted roughly 500. Usually, when you start getting aches and pains in your feet, knees, and hips that you don't normally have, its time for new shoes.

    Actually this is why I posted for advice. The last two days I have worked out I got a terrible cramp in my left foot where rhe arch is. I figured this is a sign I need new shoes.

    This is exactly how I listen for the tell tale signs that my shoes are breaking down and it is time to replace them. I log all my workouts and keep a running tab on miles walked/jogged so between knowing when the recommended replacement time is and feeling aches and pains that are uncommon in my arches and shins, etc then I know it is time to go get a new pair....
