Pot bellies in men??

My partner is nearly 46 and competes in Ironman events which sees him training up to 15 hours a week. He is pretty lean and fit but is perplexed as to why he is gaining belly fat despite not eating at a surplus.

My only thoughts for him are that maybe he could add in some strength training to all the endurance cardio and to eat cleaner ie less chocolate and coke. Even though he watches his total calories in order to eat enough to support his training I'm thinking those empty calories can't be the best nutrition for an athlete!!

Any other ideas? Oh and also to add he doesn't drink alcohol - maybe two drinks a year maximum!
