Question about weighing food

So 1/2 cup (4oz) of cottage cheese is 117 grams. 1/2 cup (4oz) of pineapple chunks is 122 grams; 1/2 cup of cranberry sauce is 140 grams; 4 ounces of turkey is 112 grams.

Why wouldn't 4 ounces of any kind of food weigh the same in grams?

TIA for any explanation.

    How are you determining whether something is 4 oz? By using a measuring cup?

    4oz = 113.4 grams

    And that is true no matter what you are measuring.

    The reason why 1/2 cup of different foods can have different weights is because of a difference in density.

    4 oz of weight would weight the same. 4 oz of volume would weight different. Your scale probably rounds to half ounces, while it is more specific with 1 gram increments.

    Think of 4oz feathers and 4oz lead. The feathers would be a bucketful, the lead would be a couple of tablespoons. Don't eat either of those though!
    If you weigh 4oz of anything on scales weighing in ounces they will always weigh approx 112g when weighed in grams, there's 28g in an ounce (give or take a bit).
    However, if you used a 4oz measuring cup then how much you've packed down will affect the amount in the cup - there's a fab You Tube clip on measuring cup portions, don't know the link, sorry.
    I'd always weigh solid ingredients on a scale that weighs in grams, keep the cups for liquids. :flowerforyou:
